Default 89 crx si stuttering when hitting high rpms

I was on the highway this morning when my crx just started jerking or stuttering really bad. I pulled over and checked things out but everything looked alright. Getting back on the highway when I would rev it up more than usual it would stutter very badly. Finally got it back into 5th gear and I figured out during the rest of my trip that if I keep it below 4k rpms it won't stutter. However, I would like to still fix it because some places here in NC have a speed limit of 70 and if you don't do 80 you get run over.

Recently redid the head, water pump, distributor, head gasket, and a few other things. CEL comes on randomly while driving but cuts off if you cut the car off then back on.

Bump, anyone have an idea?

I also meant to put that I put in a new main relay yesterday and also cleaned my air filter with K&N Filter cleaner that requires you to use a cleaning solution, then flush it out with water and then apply some type of oil to the filter once it's dry. My filter was not a K&N filter so idk if that's what has messed it up or not. The CEL that comes on randomly was coming on before that though.

whatever check engine light you are getting sounds like it is putting you in limp mode, which explains the 4k rpm problem..

you should be able to read the code even after your CEL goes out, because the ecu stores the code.. so reply back to this thread with the code you are seeing, and we can help you further.

sounds like an ingnition issue how old are the plugs and wires?

do you have a buddy that would let you borrow his dizzy for a bit to see if that fixes it?

I didn't know that the CEL was stored, I thought you could only read it when the CEL was actually one and I was in a hurry this morning and didn't get the chance to read it. I'll get back with that asap.

As for the ignition, I replaced that about 5 months ago so I don't (hopefully) think that would be it.

It was either flashing 1 or 5... I think. Just to make sure, it is the little red light in the center top of the ecu right? B/c I was having trouble distinguishing the "breaks" in the flashes.

well, 1 is 02 sensor, which commonly blinks the CEL intermittently when it starts to go bad.

5 is map sensor, which will cause limp mode for sure. check to see if your vacuum hose is connected to back of the intake manifold. If that hose comes off, your car will run like complete **** and you may get a check engine light after a while. there are some tests you can do to verify the map sensor is good or bad, and you can then replace the part accordingly.

it is possible to have both of those codes, which may explain more what you are seeing.

maybe the throttle position sensor or you need spark plugs.

Alright, apparently it wasn't the timing belt. When I checked it it was about to fall off. I put it back on and took it to a mechanic in whom I trust. He was getting an error message when reading the computer or it said that there was no code but the CEL was on. He did what he could (not a whole lot) and apologize sincerely for not being able to figure it out. Monday morning I'll be taking it by the Honda dealership

Hondas says it was nothing but an O2 sensor...
