Default Massive Oil Consumption

Questions to all the tech heads. my R is burning alot of oil and i cant seem to isolate the problem. any help?

i performed a compression test and its a solid 220 across the board. i talked to a mechanic before about this problem and he is thinking it could be valve seals.

there are no leaks on the ground etc... however my bumper is covered in black in the rear because of it so it is definately burning it i am just trying to figure out from where (the head or the bottom end) or any other problems ie pressure switch etc...

to give you an idea of how much oil i am loosing every 650km i put on it i have to end up putting almost a complete gallon of oil back in it (which is pretty much the entire thing).

btw motor got rebuilt 6 months ago and has about 7k km on it.

Valve seals?

Get a ported vtec solenoid and problem solved.

If it's the valve seals, you'll see the smoke after the engine idles for a while and then apply throttle, or after you're off the throttle and get back on it.

Oil leaks don't always show up on the ground, esp because oil is so viscous. Jack the car up and look.

PCV valve- there will be excess crankcase pressure-> blowby if the valve isn't working properly. Not sure it'd create as much consumption as you're experiencing, but it's cheap enough to replace and check.

If it's not one or more of the above, the problem is definitely the oil control rings. A problem with these won't show up on a compression test.

Do NOT let your oil level get so damn low...

Your starving the motor and especially the head of lubrication which will lead to premature failure. I would stop driving the car now and find out the issue before you cause any more damage. 1qt low, isn't a big deal. But a GALLON!!! Damn... and your driving it like that?

As mentioned, check the PCV valve first.

What was done/reasoning for the rebuild? What did they actually do? What break in proceedure did you follow?

lol@gallon

you better hope its not the bottom end since it was just rebuilt 7K ago. otherwise the shop should be getting an ear full. do what everyone already mentioned and report back. and for GODS SAKE stop driving it with so little oil before your bearings and rods go on fantastic voyage.

Actually the fact that it was rebuilt so recently almost exclusively points to the rings.

if it was a shitty job, absolutely. otherwise there has been plenty of time for the rings to seat so in that case we would be talking about a shop that didnt know what they were doing. in which case as I said before the should get an ear full.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just didn't realize the motor was recently rebuilt when I made my first post.

my current turbo motor was "broken in" on the dyno with 0 miles. no massive oil consumption.

Pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover and shake it, the little valve inside should rattle around freely. If it doesn't, the valve needs to be either cleaned or replaced (it's a $2 part...I would just replace it...) My LS motor just randomly started burning a lot of oil and the first thing I checked was the PCV valve...sure enough. It might also be worth installing a catch can to see if it collects oil...

I also have oil consumption issues on my R.
My engine was rebuilt a few thousand KM ago.
I dont get a lot of smoke from my exhaust, but I always smell engine oil if I stand outside the car. Engine runs normal.

Any idea?

LOL, I don't think I could afford to keep the oil topped off for a track event.

cracked valve guides will eat oil like no tommorow.

If you are really burning a gallon of oil for each tank of gas, your muffler would be dripping oil
PCV, not the problem.
Valve guides, not the problem.
Piston rings is the problem.
I burn plenty of oil... Even had the entire head replaced and still burns oil.
Rings.

I think it is rings as well. I had an oil burning issue after a rebuild and compression was great. The shop went in and replaced the rings and the problem was fixed.

I assume you're kidding. You live 900 miles from VIR, so this statement means you used a quart of oil every 450 miles. That's high, but not unheard of (and it's in the normal range if you're including track miles in your consumption).

The OP is using a quart of oil every 100 miles, which means it has a SERIOUS problem - one I recommend fixing before driving it any distance or on a regular basis.

FWIW, my ITR, with 57K miles including 7K track miles, uses one quart every 1-2K miles on the street and highway, one quart every 100-150 miles on the racetrack.
