Default Small tube or big tube header on LS/VTEC. Which one?

I have a LS/VTEC w/ OS P30's, 01 ITR Head, cams, IM, TB. It put down 187whp. Compression is somewhere around 11.5:1.

I am looking to upgrade to a replica Hytech header and wondering whether the small tube or big tube would be better.

Currently I am using a DC 4-1 w/2.5" collector.

that's what I've thought and been reading. just wanted to see if anyone has made any more power from the big tube.

From what I've seen with the big tube, you get a dip if you don't have a very well built 2L or bigger motor.

I have a dip with my big tube on my stock D16 lol. Bottom end is similar to stock, small dip, then it rips. I really want to put it on a dyno but feel its useless as my engine is crap anyways.

lol i don't mind a dip if it gives me more power. I'm trying to hit 200+whp. I think with the header, BPi Velocity stack, test pipe, and a retune I have a pretty good chance. I'm only 13whp away.

I'd go for a broader curve over a peak number.

that's the goal. I'd like pick up some more mid range and if top end increases too, great.

I'm putting down 187/133. I'd like be at 200/140. I might have to get cams to reach that TQ number though. Not sure. The more TQ the better.

Small tube !

You should be very close if not right at 200hp once you fine tune with the header swap.

damn I can't decide which one. I can't afford to buy 2 headers and want to buy the best one.

does everyone think the small tube will get me close to 200? or the big tube?

With your engine I would definitely get the small tube. Your engine wouldn't support the big tube not nearly enough to justify buying it. You already know you need the small tube, so why be stubborn? Have you seen any numbers from the big tube yet?

Nope. I would like to see a comparison on a 1.8L with both headers if any one has one??

custom made header for your specific set up will net you the most power everywhere.

i switched from a big tube to a spark header on a healthy built 1.8 and picked up about 25-30 mid range and about 8 up top.....my b20vtec i have now made the same peak with both small tube and big tube, but picked up about 5-8 mid with the small tube

test pipe and what exhaust are you running?

For now I have a stock ITR head/IM/TB. I can't afford to port the IM. But I am running a Carsound Highflow cat that I will be swapping out for a 2.5" test pipe to go with my 2.5" exhaust. I will also be adding a BPi Velocity stack at the end of my AEM ITR CAI then going back for a retune. If I can break the 200whp mark then I will be VERY satisfied.

i know this has been awhile, but just to help you out..

i've got a very similar build to yours.

gone through 2 headers, and 2 sets of cams, and 2 different heads. same dyno, and tuner. in advance, this was done at CAT, so don't go strictly off the dyno numbers. focus on the gains

JDM itr 4-1 header. 191 whp, hp dropped off drastically after 8400
Toda header 200 whp, with 5+hp increase everywhere from 3k up, carried hp out to 8500, dropped off smoother

this was with stock head on pr3 pistons and ctr cams
then i changed the cams and head: skunk2 cams and a ported head.. + 28 hp over the ctrs, but shitty power band.. however, look at the power i gained before vtec with the s2s2 cams over the ctrs, but when vtec kicked in, the car feel flat on its face

tuner suggested changing the exhaust setup. my 2.25" mandrel with carsound cat was great with the preevious setup, but was restricting flow on the new one.. how much you ask? take a look

this is my current dyno chart

shows open header, 2.5" exhaust with test pipe, and 2.25" exhaust with carsound cat
in that order.

basically, exhaust set aside.. i know you are talking about headers.. the Toda does well for itself, and i wouldn't imagine the others making 10whp more or anything, and IMO, 3" exhaust is the way to go on a 1.8L as well

probably small tube , but your compression is kinda up there so the big tube may help in your top end , thats a tuffy either would make power. I run a big tube , my comp is about 12.2:1 makes amazing top end.

You should talk to the company who built and designed the header.

Oh wait, all the shops who are selling them now just buy copies and have no idea about how they were designed. i.e. No true customer service.

Although I appreciate your post, I highly doubt the OP will. He is one of those "enthusiasts" who wants something for nothing, doesn't care about quality or have any concern for:

I do appreciate his post, and if I could afford a real Hytech or SMSP header I would definitely buy one. But right now, I don't have the funds to buy either of them. But when I do, I will definitely be in touch with them.
