Replacing Already Aftermarket Headunit 1996 Civic
New to me 96 civic ex. car had a break-in and they tried to get the stereo. It was already aftermarket and from 1998 Pioneer DEH-36. Doesn't look like the orig radio was laeft in there but dome light still works. I have no idea about the keyless remote as the guy I bought from could not find it in his dead mother's apartment. They succeeded in getting the faceplate and breaking up the factory radio and heater control bezel.
I got a new bezel and will be putting in a new head unit. Questions on wiring and hookup with a new unit. Old unit looks to have Honda harness cut and spliced in with crimp caps to the old Pioneer plug. I am looking the Kenwood KDC-X492. Fairly basic single DIN unit. Issue is what I will have to do with the Pioneer plug and what "hardware" I will need for this and the best way to get it hooked up.
1. Will this pioneer plug fit anything after 10 years of age?
2. Is the Kenwood plug for the new unit Kenwood specific? Will i need to pull apart the pioneer plug and rewire and crimp the kenwood plug to the Honda wiring?
3. Is there a Honda-Kenwood plug to plug adapter and am I better off trying to "factory rewire" the original wiring with a junkyard Honda plug back to the way it originally was and then hook to some kind of Kenwood mating plug to a Honda plug? Does such an animal exist?
4. Will I need a mounting adapter kit or trim pieces to fit properly in the bezel and who makes and where do I get?
Thanks.

You will have to use the Kenwood harness, connect it to the harness adapter that the Pioneer harness is connected to now, if the stock Honda plug has been cut off, hard wire the Kenwood plug to the stock harness... http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/HA-Wiring.pdf
Yes a Honda to Kenwood plug is available, but not worth it if stock plug has been cut off.
Yes you will need a kit, [if the one holding the Pioneer HU is no longer any good], Metra, Scosche, Best and American International all make kits for your car.
With a few minor mods you can also "ISO mount", [screws into side of HU] the HU, like the stock HU is mounted, this may help... http://www.installdr.com/Insta...3.pdf
You will need the stock pocket if you want to ISO mount it.

OK
It is all out including all bezel connections. Looks like the factry radio is in there somewhere probably below the cupholder/shift panel. as noted there is a 1998 pioneer harness. that is connected with crimps. it then goes down further, almost to the floor with non-honda colors (green, purple, etc) and is re-crimped to wires that are the honda colors. looks like extended to keep the radio. I still have dome light (no keyless as no unit). I understand the dome will not work without the factory. Two followup questions.
1. the pioneer harness constant 12v has a small black box along its run right by the connector ans says BATTERY on it. The box has clips and opened it up and looks like a capacitor of some soret wound in green wire. As this is with the pioneer harness and not with the new one, do i need it???
2. crimps on pioneer harness look to be connected pretty good. Is there a best method of "uncrimping these??
Please help here. Thanks.

If you do not have key-less entry there is no need to have the stock HU behind the dash, remove it an all the aftermarket wiring, should be a "T" harness that allows both the stock and aftermarket HUs to be wired into the stock harness, there will also be a green plug plugged into the back of the stock HU, you may need to connect 2 of the leads in this plug for the dome light, more on that later.
By your description it sounds like a harness adapter. ["T" harness] was not used and wiring was "hard wired", [no adapter harness used] is this the case?
Either way remove the stock HU and any aftermarket wiring, if no adapter harness was used you will need to "hard wire" the new HUs harness to the stock radio harness, you will not need the "small black box", [it is a line chock] on the new HU.
If the "T" harness adapter was used you will only need the part that plugs into the stock radio harness.
There is no "good/better" way to uncrimp a crimp connector, just cut them off, DISCONNECT THE BATT. NEG.(-) CABLE before you cut anything.
