Default 88 HF, but 89 on the title?

Me and a friend were talking, and i started checking out his crx. Its a 89hf with gsr rims, not lowered, sound system, and it supposed to have a si engine. I didnt look at the engine.
But i noticed it was an 88 right off the bat, because of the door trim was thinner, and then i noticed the seat belts are not on the door, like an 88. So i said your car is an 88? And he's like nah, 89, thats what it says on the title and insurance. I kind of argue with him for a minute about the year, but its his car so he should know best.
We look on the vin plate at the door, says it was built in 9/88.
He bought it for a hundred bucks, didnt run, but the problem was it was out of gas. lol.
So since his car was built in late 88 do you think it just came out as a 89 model or is it.... stolen? lol. I told him to check the vin numbers just in case.

cars built in the later half of one year are commonly badged as the next year... if that made sense..

The HF didn't get the door mounted seat belt until 90. So your friend's is actually an 89.

door mounts didnt start untill 90 as far as i know and teh 9 or 88 means its a 89 my 88 was built in 87.....and another way is look at the rear control arms teh 88s have the rear passive steering witch means bigg beefy control arms

CRX DX- 88
CRX Si- 88

Civic hatc- 88, 89

that is all...

this is for the North American versions...
