That's why they call it engine braking.

How does the car behave since then?

check the timing and do a compression test. If you are lucky, you didn't slap a valve with a piston.

What rpm was the motor going in 2nd when you dropped it?

Sounds like what they call a valve float. When the engine is going too fast and the valve springs aren't stiff enough, the rockers will begin to float off the cams and the piston hits the valve. All that I can say is that you are lucky it still runs, which means you may only have a couple bent valves. You are going to have to pull the head and hopefully there's no piston damage.

definitely bent valves, I did the same thing at the track...It's usually caused by bad shifting technique, I unfortunately learned incorrectly and paid the price. Learn to shift with the proper hand placement and it shouldnt be a problem in the future

jezz...Before you go rice racing learn how to shift. Poor prelude. Atleast you manned up and didn't say it was your girlfriend trying to learn how to drive stick like lots of other pussies would. (sorry but the more people that rub this in, the better the lesson you learn which in turn should hopefully stop you from making big crucial, costly mistakes like this)

To answer your question though, your head is going to need to get pulled. Likely as all have said you have some fuked up valves. Quit running it though now. Don't even start it or its going to be worse. Next thing your car won't start at all, and than your looking for a full rebuild likely.

Good luck dood, and way to man up to your mistake!!!

Indeed...it cost me $970 to rebuild my head after I bent all the exhaust valves and snapped off all the valves guides. Ouch!

And if you've never seen what 3rd-to-4th looks like, here it is. And yes that's me and I'm not ashamed! lol. Learn from my mistakes guys and make sure you know proper shifting technique!

yeah i did the same thing the other day in my h22 accord. i went to pass someone and *** soon as it downshifted it didnt want to go and stalled out at the next light. come to find out the retainer broke and dropped the valve into the cylinder which then caused a hole in the piston, i dont even want to know what the cylinder looks like. and thats why im on this forum going to buy a 5gen.
