I just took my dizzy cap off to discover that the retaining screw was gone. The plastic fan blade looking thing was spinning freely on a shaft. Is that suppose to be like that, could that cause my car not to turn over?

Yes that will cause the car not to run, it will be shooting all the spark to one cylinder or randomly to different ones instead of to the right one at the right time.

 

Where could it of gone? It's not in the cap anywhere!?!? What kind of screw should I use to replace it, a counter sink one or will a standard bolt do?

 

You can get the bolt/screw from the dealer.

true, but some say a nice allen head screw works better. Also spray some brake kleen on the threads of whatever fastener you use, allow to dry, then a nice drop of like 242 blue loctite, or anything close to it.

Buy a new cap and rotor, the hardware will come with. I've had the screw fall off (my own fault) and it caused some damage to the internal components. I recommend replacing them. It's cheap, like 20$ max.

 

It looks like the size is 4mm x .70 mm
if you are trying the hardware store..

 

yeah, you should definitely use blue loctite on that screw.. you do not want that thing coming off. its bad news if it does, and it happens all the time around here.

 

you ought ot consider buying a new rotor (and cap) anyway.

I used a bolt with a lock washer so it doesnt happen again. its much easier to remove. And a bolt is less prone to strip than the phillips head screw. also something thats interesting is 90-91 integras had an allen head bolt, maybe for this same reason.

 

Thanks alot guys. So far i've replaced the main relay, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, and the fuel pump. All due to a loose 4mm x .70 mm lose screw well at least all of those are taken care of. Were can I get the new cap at?

i had same thing happen to me and i did what he said and ive never had a problem.
