worth taking off PS belt???
sorry to post this in the R forum but i know a lot of u R guys do this at the track. i hear u can gain 1-3hp, but is it worth the minimal gains for a street car?? any opinions and or positive/negative feedback is welsome. thanks
I disconnected mine back in the day when i was a drag ricer, err racer, and it did make a difference, now i have the whole system removed because i grew to like the feel of a manual rack for road race/auto-x, but i dont mind the few extra hp or weight reduction.
You can run just with the belt off, but steering effort is VERY high. Not too bad though, considering i drove around like that for over a year.
I hate having the belt off, it sucked. It felt unsafe going around corners because there was so much effort needed. And I felt no difference in power. in fact, to me, it felt slower because the car seemed so much "heavier",
But i have no problems with a manual rack honda. My cx was fun to whip around in corners.

I think running without draining the fluid can cause your ps system to spring a leak. My ps has a small leak, and I am almost positive disconnecting the ps without draining caused the leak.

thanks for the comment, any body know for sure if runnin with no PS belt will cause the system to leak or have something go wrong with it?

I drove from here to Watkins Glen (NY), on track for 2 days and had no issues what so ever.
I remove it for the 2-3 free hp and stability under heavy brake application.

I was thinking about that, I mean I'm sure there's some slight drag from the belt alone, but with the A/C off, I don't think it would be more than 1 hp at most.
I'm fairly certain that removing the belt isnt any better (power wise) than just turning the AC off....
At the track, I try to always remove at least the power steering belt, sometimes both PS and AC belts. On the dyno, removing the PS belt did yield about 3HP to the wheels. The AC belt only took away 1HP.
I don't recommend taking the P/S belt off without draining the fluid or removing the pump.
With all the fluid inside it's very hard to steer and the fluid is blocking/dampening the forces that are working on the wheels so that you don't feel everything at the steering wheel.

Well, did you try driving it without the fluid?
When I drained the fluid and remove the pump, the steering felt much more responsive and confident. The feedback is much better....

I have yet to take that next step.

I like beaing able to put the belt back on after the last session of the day and then driving home.

, but it is different if you drain the fluid than just taking the belt off. i took ps out of my old gsr and liked it, but i don't like just taking the belt off. it's hard to keep one hand on my woman and one hand on the wheel wid no ps
