Ok, so I hate to beat down the same path that so many threads have gone down, but I have some particular questions. I'm on my way out the door so I am sorry for being brief.
I am due for an oil change soon. I live in AZ, where the temperature even in the upcoming winter months doesn't even dip below freezing (right now it's 100 degrees and going up).
I found an independent Amsoil dealer who's a bit of a drive from me with 0w-30 at 9 bucks a pop. I've heard it's the best I can get.
But I can just go get some Royal Purple or Castrol for less $ and less hassle just down the street.
My R's engine is built with raised compression (11.5:1) and has an oil cooler.
So tech gurus (I'm sorry I am clueless sometimes I don't do all my own auto work for lack of tools/space), do you think I should make the trip for Amsoil despite the 0w-30 or should I go with Royal Purple or Castrol.
Sorry, I know this topic gets covered a lot but none of the "oil" threads cover what I need to figure out.
Thanks!!

Word, I supply Castol thorgh my shop and I CAN'T even get this stuff, for some reason Autozone is the only place that carries it. Also interesting, is that the 0w30 is marked as their RACING oil, even though it's so thin.

not sure if thats their racing oil, but i do know that its actually one of the thickest w30 oils out there

It is what I run now
It is what I run now
LOL...
I ONLY run Amsoil... even in the ladies Pathfinder. Why? It's the best on the market IMO... sure it may cost a little more... but the proven results of it speak for themselves...
FWIW... I tracked the car all weekend (fresh oil change before hand) I burnt almost NO oil... and it was still squeeky clean.
I totally stick by it. I personally buy it by the case though.

I switched from Mobil1 to Castrol 10w30 and now am burning about half as much oil as i previously did. Rather amazing to think about and i punch myself for not switching sooner. I may give the 0w30 a try next time around just for another comparison. Really, you cant go wrong with any of em. It just depend how deep your pockets are and what you plan on doing with the cah.
I switched from Mobil 1 5W-30 to Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 for the higher zinc levels to protect my cams and slightly higher oil pressure.
ignore whether an oil is 0/5/10w and just look at the high temperature high shear number.
generally the thicker an oils viscosity the higher the HTHS number will be. HTHS is another measurement of viscosity at extreme temps and stress.
"The temperature for an HTHS measurement is done at 150C or 302 F, which is the average peak temperature likely to be encountered in a bearing. The oil is mechanically sheared at a rate of 1 x10^6 shearing operations/second."

if your worried about a 30wt. oil being too thin then purchase one that is ACEA A3 approved on the back of the bottle ensuring that you have an HTHS > 3.5.
here a list of visocity of a few oils at 100*C.
castrol syntec/cst at 100*C
5w-20 / 9.0
5w-30 / 9.7
10w-30 / 10.1
0w-30 / 12.1
mobil1/cst at 100*C
5w-20 / 8.8
0w-30 / 11
5w-30 / 11.3
10w-30 / 10.0
0w-40 / 14
note that it doesnt matter what the "W" number says as each oil has a different viscosity at 100*C.

And BTW, my vote is for the RP 5w-30 for the Type R in questions here.
What weight did you switch too? I want to see what it would do in a DD for 3k miles... My Mobil1 0w-40 is much thicker like the data above but it turns black and burns about 1 - 1.5 quarts or so. It has to be a Mobil 1 thing.. And it doesnt help that my tune is running rich...

I use 5w30 royal purple. I have always used valvoline on my cars in the past because it is cheap and they were'nt anything special. With royal purple I noticed a big difference. It is much more expensive but worth it to me. I have never tried amsoil but always here great things about it.
What is the going rate for Amsoil oil now? I cant seem to find anyone in SoCal near me that sells Amsoil...
RP is a bit above $7.
I got Mobil 1 0w-40(30 Qts) for under $5.
Castrol 0w-30 is hard to locate as well...

Single quarts of oil:
Mobil 1 $6.99 Autozone, $6.27 Wal-Mart
Castrol Syntec $6.99 Autozone (including the 0W30 from Germany), $6.27 Wal-Mart (which did not have 0W30)
Pennzoil Platinum $5.97 Wal-Mart
Royal Purple at Wal-Mart - if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it

5-quart jugs of oil:
Mobil 1 $26.00 Wal-Mart
Castrol Syntec $25.00 Wal-Mart
Pennzoil Platinum $23.00 Wal-Mart
Valvoline Synpower $22.50 Wal-Mart
Quaker State (Q) $18.00 Wal-Mart
An off brand (I forget the name, I assume it's their house brand) $17.77 Wal-Mart
Cases of six 1-quart bottles:
Mobil 1 $34.89 Costco, $34.88 Sam's Club
I'm trying the 0W30 Castrol in the ITR, and we'll see how it goes. I've got two track events coming up early next month, so I'll see whether it uses as much oil on the track as the Pennzoil and Mobil 1 I've been using up till now (roughly a quart every 150 track miles).
Which means it's now $8.00 after rebate. For five quarts. Not a bad deal for major brand full synthetic oil.
I'm doing another track event this coming weekend, so I'll get more actual results.
