metal rattling noise in engine when i drive
Around 3k rpm when I accelerate moderately I hear this sound that sounds like a small piece of metal in rattling in a tin can. All the other rpms are fine except when it hits like 3k to like 3.5k there is this noise. Whats the problerm?

I had the same problem at that exact RPM. It was the heat shield for my CAT that was going bad so I just unbolted it and took it off, and no more noise. Same thing happened to my Explorer. Muffler shop just ripped the heat shield off of the cat and rattle went away.

Kinda. Detonation is an un-contolled burn. Diesel engines run off a precise injection

i would try to fix it before you pull it off of there my step father pulled his off on his old caprice and the floor caught fire... funny as hell to watch but im not taking any chances
I agree, it sounds like a heat shield to me.
I had same prob @ same RPM's on my old hatch.
It's annoying as heck but nothing to worry about.
I would also rule out the detonation theory though, just to be safe.
Another thing, when I installed my new header the O2 sensor came partially loose 24 hrs later. It made the same low rpm rattle. If your shields are good, and your sure it's not detonation, make sure the O2's are tight.
Note: the loose O2 is a freak thing so I doubt it's that.

Could be the bottom engine mount at the timing belt end loose and rattling against the chassis - I had this problem when the garage changed the timing belt and forgot to tighten the nuts up after...
just get some bailing wire and wrap a piece around the cat and sheild, twist it down with a plyers and no more rattles. ive seen whole exhaust systems held together by this stuff guess that makes me a north dakotan
Check your catalytic converter, muffler(s), and/or silencer(s). A piece or pieces of the insulation in one or more of those devices could be rattling around with the exhaust flow. I've had two vehicles with this problem.
Answer = Pass emissions and find a test pipe

My A/C lines are no where near my cat converters. My cat converters are under my car. The thing I DO worry about is a stray bag on the road getting stuck to my cat and getting a nasty melting plastic smell for days or weeks. Happened to my girlfriend's old 2001 Malibu. And that's WITH the shield on.

Same thing happenned to me on my 97 hatch.
The cat on those is attached to the exhaust mani on the bottom front of the motor though, not under the car like say an EM1.
