Doing axle change using the guide with pics, having problem with lower ball joint.
i have tried hitting the stud with a rubber mallet and i also have tried to take it off from the upper ball joint. it will not budge. even resorted to using the fork seperator. please help this newbie.
take it from on top,its easier but takes longer:
-take off the two bolts holding the camber arm to the top
-take off the bolt holding the fork
-take out the strut
-pull out the arm and yank the axle back
or use a air hammer and a fork to the lower ball joint, if you don't have that then go down to the local auto shop and rent a ball joint separator best way.

Best way, period. It's usually not a good idea to mess with those fork separators anyways. Too easy to tear the boots which is bad if you want/need to reuse the ball joint.

or you can take your biggest ball peen and crack the LCA a couple good times. it'll go, dont hit the stud on the ball joint itself it wont do anygood but to ruin the threads and cost you a new balljoint too

Try that.</TD></TR></TABLE>
That is BY FAR the absolute BEST and easiest way to separate the lower ball joint, PERIOD. I have done it countless times on both sides of my front suspension over the past several years, as well as my brother's del Sol and other friend's Hondas. Works every time. It's so easy, so fast, don't have to swing hammers or use pickle forks and worry about breaking or tearing something. It's even easier than using the proper ball joint separator tool.
You do need a 1/2" ratchet, though. A 3/8" ratchet handle won't cut it. A large wrench with a wide handle may work, also. Basically it just has to be able to fit in the space shown in that link when the suspension is jacked up, and not fit when it's at full droop. This is key to the handle forcing the pieces apart.
The shock/spring must also be bolted up for this to work, as it's the spring pushing the suspension down quick when you release the jack that makes this work.

That doesn't always work. The tool will get it off every time.

that ratchet trick works if the car is on the ground, but if you're working on a lift its a bit different. yeah you can lower the car and bla bla bla, but if the car is already in the air, its just best to use the separator

What? The car is in the air on jackstands when you use the ratchet trick, definitely not on the ground.
I actually changed out my CV axles one time on a lift at a Chevy dealer where my friend works. I busted out the tall floor stand jack w/ foot pedal to push up on the LCA, inserted a 1/2" ratchet, released the jack, and POW the ball joint quickly separated.
It ALWAYS works, provided the spring and shock are still bolted into place. At least it's always worked for me, on every car I've tried it on.

It actually works by jumping on it if you have unbolted the shock and spring already.
For those in Canada, I used a Mastercraft adjustable wrench in place of the craftsman wrench.

ok i got it off using the ratchet trick. now heres the problem. the reason why i changed my axle in the first place is becuz i heard a clunking noise coming from the passenger side. reading through threads i concluded that it was my axle. changed it and when i test drove it, the noise is still there.
have you checked all your suspension bolts and nuts to make sure everything is tight?
Is it a concistant noise? Or something that just happens when you hit a bump?
