can you tell a 1st generation b16 and a 2nd generation b16 apart by looking at them?

I think there's a way to tell the difference, but I'm not sure.
the engine's have the year on them. i don't know how to read it, but somebody on here could probably tell you.
and if the IM hasn't been changed the first gen has a weird looking IM

Valve covers are different too. On the first Gen the DOHC is big and on second gen. the VTEC is big. But those could always be swithed so dont go by only that.
Also you could check trannies. 1st. = Cable, 2nd = Hydro. But dont only go by that either.
Your best bet is on the Egine year

1st gen distributor is bigger, has white plugs while 2nd gen has grey plugs. intake manifold on 1st gen says PGM-FI really big 2nd gen says nothing.. has 2 single wire o2 sensors, not just 1 sensor like the 2nd gen. 1st gen has a fatter vtec solenoid. valve cover says DOHC bigger than the vtec on the first gen, 2nd gen is opposite. I think the second gen has an oil cooler on the back that uses coolant to cool the oil that the first gen does not. first gen is cable tranny, 2nd is hydro.
Theres a bunch more stuff but that would be enough to know just by looking at it.
