Default Help needed ,, from Sweden

Hi there..

I am about to build a offroad car and i want to use a honda crx engine / transmission setup.. And i want to run 30inch tires on it. So lower gearing is a must...

Where do i find other gears to change the gear ratio.?

Is it possible to change the final drive so that all the gears get lower,, ( hope that makes sense )..

I will start building really soon, later on i will rebuild the inside and mount a diff, but i need to know what gearbox has the best upgrade potential, strongest housing for beefy axels.

I want it to match a crx engine,, ( you pick model 125hp or 150hp v-tec, the transmission decides what engine i will run )..

Thanx..

yes, you would want to change the final drive - you would need to go with aftermarket gears to get anywhere close - the 30" tall tires will require a gear that is at least 25% lower - about as close as you are going to get is a 4.90 final drive - with 30" tires, this would be about equal to a USDM DX transmission (3.88 final drive) with 23-24" tires - you can get 4.90 for both D-series and B-series transmissions

id say d series setup because the trannys should be able to handle more stress.

I'd rather say D series setup since the transmission are much cheaper to replace if something goes wrong. Honda transmission have proven themselves before, strength is found in all engine types. Check out some youtube videos of turbo hondas if you want to see just how strong they ares. Surprising considering in my area D series cable transmissions go for around 30$ for a DX model. This would make you capable of having spares which come in handy.

I would recommend going F series personally. The base model accord engine from 90-97 have torque and the transmissions are operated with cables, making it much easier to be RWD (since D and B are linkages). As well, the clutch is hydraulic powered, which can be converted to cable using a pivot mechanism.

i'd say B series because of the way shorter gearbox and better HP. are you racing off road or just crawling around?

It will be an awesome offroader.. I will post some pictures later on..

It seems like most are using b- series when they build massive hp turbo machines..

I remember reading a swedish car magazine where this guy Jason Whitfield talked about how strong the original gearbox is in the Hondas.. That car in the magazine was a blue civic 600+ hp

I will never pass 250 hp in my car , but it must be able to handle up to 30inch wheels, and the gearing must be low..

Thanx again for all the help.. ( and keep on with more ideas )

I remember hearing that the 4WD wagons had a super low granny gear ( a super low gear below first gear).
I'm not sure this would be usefull to you or not but I though i should atleast mention it.

and one more thing there are adapter kits for putting different tranny and engine combos together, such as B to D, H to B, F to B

and I'm not sure what your plans are for the layout but if its 4WD you could copy this design (from a mini monster truck with GSR motor) put the motor in the middle of the vehicle longitudnally (inline) so that the axels run to the front and rear, then you will need some custom drivelines and front and rear differentials, maybe with this method you can correct the gearing at the front and rear diffs.

you can always use the 4wd gear box in the 2wd car.. just dont hook up the rear, if rules allow.

for what it is worth, i run a 4.9 final drive made by Gear-X in a d-series cable trans in my street car, and i probably have about 12k street miles on it so far with no issues.. In my opinion, Gear-x Final drives are up to the task.

Jumping back in my old thread..

This is the nr on my gearbox ( L3-1308018 ). It has the intermediate axle on it..

The engine is a D16-A7

This is what i want to use for my offroad build..

Will this gearbox handle the abuse ??,, i`m going to change the final drive to use bigger tires..

I would also like to tune the engine .. What are my options, say 180hp, is that possible ??

Will some other head fit this block, to gain some extra hp..

I have searched this forum but i`m not sure what can be done, so now you know what i have to build from, ..

Linus..
