dropped my block off for machining ??????????
so I just dropped my block off to get machined. its an H22A1 and I will be using Mahle Gold series pistons. I went over the honing procedure with the machinist and asked him about 3 times if that was something he could and was willing to do, he said it was no problem and pretty standard. Towards the end he was talking about impregnating the cylinder walls with silica when he was done with the hone and i have never heard of that. he agreed that the instructions from the factory manual dont say anything about it and he would have to look into it. any thoughts? would there be anything wrong with the impregnation?
also, i asked for a clearance of 0.0013" and the stock specs are 0.0002-0.0011" service limit of 0.002". I was told by a reputable source to add 0.0005" to the stock clearance for these pistons. ?????? sound alright or should i call them back and ask for the stock spec?

Damn, that shop works quick!
I don't have a local machine shop nearby so if I send my shiz out, it'll likely be gone for a month or two.
Let us know how it perfoms once it's back in.

i never said the machining was done
. i got a call 30 minutes after i dropped it off saying to come back to the shop because there was "a problem with the block". I asked the guy what the problem was and he proceeded to tell me that the didn't have the tooling to do the FRM sleeves properly. I guess their machine uses a glycol based coolant and you need to use an oil based coolant to do the honing properly. I was just glad they didn't try it and screw something up.
Well the machinist gave me a phone number and a name for someone else to call that could do it. So I called them up and talked to them for a bit and gave them the rundown which the machinist had already done and he was confident they could do it. So I asked where they were and was pleasantly surprised. I got sent to these guys, http://www.moslerauto.com/ I talked to the guy there for a while and he asked me if I knew what piston to wall I wanted and when I told him he told me "No" and said he would call Mahle and figure out exactly what the clearance I need is. It put my mind to ease and i bring my rings in monday to get the end gaps clearanced. all in all it ended up being cheaper than either of the joe schmo machinist I had talked to before.

Send it to GE. They're one of the few machine shops around the country that are established in being able to hone frm. Shipping would be about $150 to and back. They charge $150-175 to bore/hone and the turnaround time is 1-2 days. $300 total to bore/hone frm is extremely reasonable.
Send your pistons with the block and tell them what piston-wall clearance you want. Even though these pistons are forged, they expand like cast pistons so I don't see any reason why you should need more than stock clearance.

I won't know until I drop the rings off on Monday and ask. but I will make sure I find out as much as I can and post it up.

This might be a slightly naive question, but what does dropping off your rings have to do with the piston-wall clearance you want? And why would you need either to decide the clearance? They only reason they need the piston is to know how much to take off the cyl wall to meet the clearance you request.
maybe my post was confusing. All I was saying was that I am going to the shop Monday to drop off the rings after the block is done being honed. At that time I will ask the machinist what clearance he ended up using for P2W.

Hamilton & Kovalainen are both doing well too though. Massa is driving very well but Ferrari is in a little slump right now. Just like McLaren-Mercedes was off to a slow start. It's been fun watching the races so far.
Where is Honda in all this? Oh that's right only 97 points out of first...
Good luck with your build

For that price I could get an F23 block and bore/hone it to 87mm while getting an additional 150ccs and more mechanical advantage. Sorry it's the practical side of me that escapes occasionally...

Technically? No, but it has not been much of an issue for the last 34,000 miles on my nonVTEC build. *shrug*

Who would've won the 07 season barring a foolish employee? And don't say it was a cheated car because the espionage happened after the season began.
McLaren has turned it on now, but it may be too late. We'll see. Heikki's been pretty disappointing.
All in all though, being a F1 Ferrari fan is beyond a cliche.
