Default Made Wastegate Dump Last night... Critique...

Tell me how to improve my welds before I do my downpipe...
this was my first real welding project with stainless.. it welds nice.
it was on a miller 180 @80amps not full pedal ever... w/ gas lense

seems like it would have been better to route it down the exhaust side away from the intake. the welds look a bit cold but i think a smaller filler rod would help you to even out the "lumpiness" of the welds. what size filler rod are you using?

Hard to believe you strapped such a nice wastegate to such a pile of **** manifold.

I might change that placement.. i need to get my downpipe/radiator situation figured out.. i hope I have room for it all...

the rod was super thin.. maybe it was technique, im new to this.. thanks for the suggestions.

Lets see the inside, that tight bend could be a problem if your boosting low psi.

the pie cut bend is only ~30 deg, then the other one is a 90.
Its mostly a drag car... there will be no low boosting...

Ok, I know the bend is not bad but coming right off that outlet usually restricts the opening.

also having the dump so long can have a negative effect on boost control. the longer the dump tube is, the more restriction it has, and the more possibility of boost spike/creep.

Also with the 44mm, you can use bigger pipe if you need to. We did one with 2 inch pipe, was running very low boost on a high comp setup

I'm curious as to why you had it go over and down the driver side like that and not keep it close to the downpipe? Just kinda wondering.

Edit: just read your other post haha. Reading owns me.

70-80 amps on the flange is ok, but on the thinwall tubing I'd turn it down to 35-45 amps and .045" filler, but that's just how I do it. You may have better luck at first with 1/16 filler until you find your own technique.

do shorter incriments of welding so you can keep gas coverage over red hot material, instead of moving as fast and as far as possible..

also, my favorite cup to do work with is a #8.. it covers about half an inch of material, as oppose to some of the other cups like a #4 which covers only about a 1/4"

I have never heard of this, If anything the tuner Jeff Evans (Boosted Hybrid on this board) wrote a write up on how having a dumptube to short can actually hinder HP. Jeff encourage his customer to rout the dump tube under the oil pan.

the longer the dump is, the more likely the exhaust will not get sucked back into the turbo...
