I put in a bottle of "guaranteed to pass" with a tank of gas yesterday and directions says, to drive it til its nearly empty then refill with high octane gas. Is 91 octane (supreme unleaded) good enough? or should I add an octane booster before I go? The state referree is about 30 miles away so getting the engine warmed up is not a problem. Any other tips?
if ur name is right.. i wouldnt be putting anything lower than 93 octane to the LS/VTEC, or the LS engine u got swaped........ i only put 93 on my mini me... .. like they say... put a new filter, change oil, change the fuel filter and run a little lean..... reset ur ecu so it adjust to the lean setup, so its mixes air/fuel the right way before going ....it should help the way the gas its going to be combusted and be a little clean once it goes out the muffler.... other than that , u just gotta pray to the honda gods, and hope they pass u... and dont forget the roll of dollars on ur pocket to bribe the tester.... good luck!

Thank you all! for the record, I'm running a 97 LS right now (lsvtec motor's being built) stock except for lightened flywheel and jdm header (underneath the shield).
CFN Olympic gas station in South San Francisco sells 92 or 93 Octane...
Summation:
1. Put high octane gas
2. new filter/oil/plugs (if possible)
3. run engine hard for at least 20min before test
4. reset ECU
5. Pray

so,seeing I have to go to the smog ref with my jdm b16 in a week should I put high octane in also?I always use 91 but I have access to 101 octane, should I use it before the test?
Wouldn't high octane gas in an engine that is not tuned to run high octane gas produce more emissions? I would imagine putting the lowest octane possible to ensure a complete burn would be your best bet to passing smog. Let us know how it goes, best of luck to you!

i was worried about that...so i thought putting in Supreme unleaded (91) and a bottle of octane boost should suffice. I'm leaving in a few minutes ...Thanks again and I'll post the results...pass or not, I'm sure it'll help a few of our fellow HT members.

Smog ref? To get your BAR Sticker? Make sure you got a reciept for your motor...
Good luck to you.
You can take off your intake and clean out your TB area...and your IM if you want to fiddle with taking it off. Reach in there and wipe out as much of the inside of your intake as possible...every little bit helps.

Well...thanks for all the info, but I once again failed! Emissions were higher than before, lol...WTF! Max reading for the HC is 95 and the last time I went they measured mine at 175, then earlier it was 265...I put in the guaranteed to pass yesterday, drove over 200 miles, filled up this morning, put in a bottle of penzoil octane boost, put in new NGK plugs, drove it hard for at least 45 minutes before getting the test...Its basically a stock motor with lightened flywheel and jdm header. The original catalytic is installed and bolted to an HKS exhaust. Any clue?
Because I havent the slightest idea on what to do next...Well, not really...I can get a new Cat and replace the header with a stock usdm type R 2 piece exhaust manifold that I have sitting in my garage...Unless any of my fellow HT member have any other suggestions...

By mid September...thats when my registration expires. I just dont want to buy a new catalytic converter and end up failing once again. I wonder why my HC is that high? WTF is an HC anyway, lol...I posted a thread asking this question but no one really gave me a straight answer...

Thanks a lot big pete...Thats probably what it was, an old cat. I guess my next post would be in the classified section for a new oem cat.
HC is hydro carbon. It does sound like a CAT, you should be able to get a direct replacement from the autoparts store for less than 100. Actually I know someone in the east bay who might be willing to lend you a new cat. Drop me an email, noah@norcalcrx.org.

Hey thanks a lot Noah! Off the subject, do you know a yellow CRX Si with plates, fstcrx in the east bay? He gave me a sample on my way to the smog station earlier...pretty sweet motor, sounded fully built...I was doing about 75 mph just right behind him for about 5 miles, then he downshifted and sped away...tried to catch up and hit my rev limiter on 4th gear and thats when he pulled to his exit...good kill (for him) lol...caught me off guard...(yeah right) First CRX that I really liked...clean yellow, nice rims...perfect sleeper!
