smoke from under hood
I bought a '95 Honda Civic EX Coupe about a week ago. I don't know much about cars, so I brought a mechanic friend with me and he said it was in good running condition. I paid the guy an extra 200 to have the AC fixed for me. The first day it blew ice cold, but later that day it made a weird swoosh noise (that's the best I can describe it, it was loud and sounded like "SHHHH") and after that it didn't blow cold anymore. I had my mechanic friend check it out a few days ago and the pressure was over 100 but there was no freon in it. This is where the details become fuzzy, because again, I don't really know much about cars. I watched him do something that looked like letting out the pressure, the gauge then read normal pressure. He charged it up then, and was careful not to overcharge it, but it still wouldn't blow cold. I decided not to worry about it right then because I'm trying to move and don't have much money at the moment.
Yesterday, I was driving (the ac was off) and all of a sudden, smoke started billowing from under my hood. I pulled off the road and shut the car off. 3 different people said that it sounded like a freon leak. I walked around to the front of the car and saw fluid dripping down my front bumper, but I wiped it with a napkin and it looked like rusty or dirty water. It wasn't slick like oil and I couldn't see oil coming from anywhere, so I don't think that's what it was. I turned on my car and I saw some fluid gushing from the underside of what looked like the radiator.
I had it towed to a mechanic (unfortunately my mechanic friend is at boot camp so I can't call him in on this), but he's not open today. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what it could be and how expensive it could be to fix (ballpark range). I'm supposed to be moving tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should go ahead on faith that my car will be operational.
Thanks in advance for any help.
