Default Alternator bolt

How are you guys getting the long square ended bolt out of the alternator? I cannot make it budge at all, I used PB blast, pry bar, hammer and basically everything else I can think of. Oh and the belt is still on but Idk if it'd make a difference being off or not. Helppp

I went through the same thing. Keep rocking the alternator back and forth. It will loosen up. Also, wack the end of the bolt with the threads to help it along. It took me about 2 hours to get the thing free.

Yeah this thing is pissing me off. I went out to work on it today had it all jacked up and then it started to rain, brought everything inside only for it to clear up

So what did you end up actually getting it out with once it was loosened up? I can't seem to get anything on that square end.

This bolt can be a real problem. I striped a block bare and this was the last thing I got off. You have to be careful when you pound on the threaded side because you could mushroom the end of the bolt. I ended up cutting it flush with the alternator bracket and using a small rod close to the diameter of the bolt and a 3 lbs mini sledge after soaking it in liquid wrench for 2 days. Of course the block was out of the vehicle.

good luck

I used liquid wrench on it, a torch, brute force, air chisel...

You are not going to get anything on the square head. I need to push it out from the threaded end. Like I said I banged on it for 2 hours. Just before I took a sledge to the rest of the car in frustration, I went back inside, grabbed a soda and some Cheese-Its, realxed for a few minutes. I got back under the car, a was able to push it out with my finger.

I think the best way to free it up is to wedge a screw driver around the square head to keep it from rotating, they rock the alternator back and forth till it is loose.

Grab some patients, and have at it.

Oh, make sure you locate a new bolt. It does not come with a new alternator. And it is not a stock part at my local Autozone....ask me how I know....

Yeah the threaded end has already mushroomed so I'm not worried about it anymore, it's pouring right now. I'm gonna get up early tomorrow and try everything possible. Makes me feel a little better knowing other people have had the same problem. I'll let you know if and how I get it. Thanks for the help

It's not really 'mushroomed' yet. The first couple threads are just messed up

The easiest way to do it is to take the belt off the alternator and rock it back and forth. Then that bolt should tap out from the end that had the nut on it. Ive done this like 3 times and ive never had a problem... But i always take it off last, sounds like some people are trying to take it off first? The alternator pretty much has to be loose before it will come out.

Getting that bolt out is so much easier than putting it back in unless you have your car way up in the air.

Remove the two bolts holding the alternator bracket to the block (the bracket and alternator will back out as you loosen the bolts). Then you will be able to remove the alternator and apply heat and hammer to the stuck bolt.
