Default 8,000 rpm Rev limiter on "stock" p28

Couple of things, what is the correct rev limiter for a d16z6 supposed to be. I thought it was 7200 but maybe I am wrong. I found out tonight that it rev all the way to 8,000 rpm on a p28 ecu that I recently picked up and was told it was untouched. Is this a big deal to rev a stock z6 that high?? I never have done that under load before, never went higher than 7,500.

Also, if I wanted to rev that high safely, what would I have do the internals.

I figure, stiffer valve springs, and other various top end parts but would the bottom end be ok?

stock is 7200 so that p28 is not a virgin. But do you have after market gauges ?

I think he's getting at the "optimistic" view of Honda's guages, they like to say a certain percentage faster than they are (speedometer for example).

However, I don't think the OEM gauge would be off by 800 RPM (that's 11% off!)

the revlimiter depends on which P28 you look at.
Some are 7200, some are 7400. Which is strange since they have the same maps, so it doesn't make power up there anyway.
reving to "8000" on the cluster is not that uncommon, honda tachs are notoriously off at higher RPMs plus any tinkering with anything only compounds the problem. (the aftermarket gauge faces reference that slvrcvc93 made)

If you doubt if the ECU is chipped.... open the ECU and take a look. Takes 30 seconds. Don't touch anything inside the ECU and you can't damage anything.

If you really are reving to 8000 RPM via chip, don't. The head is not made to do that RPM, bad things can happen. (and eventually will)

alrighty, never knew about the tach issues so that's good to know. I was eventually going to open it up but I wanted to see if there was something else that could cause it. Thanks guys!

A basic bolt-on stock Z6 will make power up to 7250-7300, so the 7400 isn't that far off. But the 8000 limiter isn't right.

FYI, I ran this same stock Z6 up to 7800 daily for a year and a half w/o any valve float issues. Honda springs are unrated. And before you ask why...I had a VX trans mounted to it. That was the only way to somewhat make up for the crappy 2nd to 3rd shift.

If you wanted to safely rev that high you would have to do some head work, ie. Camshaft, valves and retainers.

Yeah man, I've hit "8500" on my Z6 doing doughnuts in empty parking lots before.

Honda OEM tachs suck.

I had one cluster in which the tach buried out with a P72. I changed the cluster and tached out at 8100. Just for giggles I tried yet another cluster and tached out at 8400.

My engine revs higher than my tach lists, so I have no idea how close/how far off it is
