Starter will not disengage
For some reason the starter will not disengage after you let the key go from starting or if the key is in the off position. All you hve to do to start it is hook the battery up, but the starter will continue to crank (with car running) until the battery is unhooked. Im guessing there is a short in the ignition switch or the starter somewhere. Just curious if this has happened to anyone before?
there could be either one or both of two problems here. after you start the motor and return the key back to run from start the solenoid coil windings of the starter should demagnetize allowing the pinion gear to slide away from the pressure plate or flywheel with the aid of a spring to pull it out of the way. the more likely problem is that the coil winding circuit has shorted to ground allowing a constant current flow through the starter causing a constant crank situation. the other less likely problem is that the spring that helps the starter pinion away from the pressure plate/flywheel is broken and will not pull it away so the starter is along for the ride of the crankshaft speed. but like i said i would put money on the coil windings being shorted.
