I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! Sign for a Type R Head?
Alright heres the deal. I just recently bought a V-Tec head from somebody, he was claiming that it was a 96 Type-R head J-SPEC. I brought it to my mechanic at the shop, dude looked at the cams and said that they looked like Gs-R cams. Then he looked at the year stamped on the front of it, it said 93 and he said that no Type Rs were made in that year. So he highly doubted that it was a type R. Is it reliable to look at the numbers stamped on the front?
How can I truely tell if it is a type R? Keep in mind I am kind of new to this and trying to learn. So try to be a little more descriptive in your explanation. THANX!!

Well if it has the PR3 stamp, how can you tell if it is truely a type R. Like how would you explain it to somebody who has very little knowledge about these things.
GSR's (p-72) werent made in 93 except for B17 but thats different story...
So If it has a 93 stamp its deff not a type R, I dont see why the stamps wouldnt be correct 93 is pretty phar from 96 i wouldnt buy the head unless its cheap

Man that's what I was afraid of. But I heard so many different things. Like the casting is exactly the same as a b16 and the stampings on the front are not reliable. You'd have to look inside to really tell. The dude said he had bought it from Nad's shop, a respectable motor dealer, and they had said it was a type R head. I need something conclusive to look at to make sure.

I think all the ITR cams look the same, except possibly the 00-01 USDM ITR cams.
If the head is definitely stamped 93 and has ITR cams, it might be an ITR head made in late 93 for the 95 JDM ITR.

***** freakin confusing man. Well the dude that sold it to me said that it was a 96 Type-R Head J-Spec. I didn't even know they had 95 type-Rs, but is it even possible to have a head made for a 95 in 93?
-ey man, by the way, thanx for all the feedback

Here's my thoughts. There was a 1995 ITR in Japan. So chances are like most cars nowadays, it was actually released in late 1994. So the head could have been cast a little less then a year from when the car was completely built and sold.

If it is marked PR3-X it is either a B16 or a ITR head as they both use the same casting. Don't bother with the second #, it is not important.
The difference is in some of the parts in the head, and the fact that the ITR gets some bowl work which the B16 does not. It's not a port job, it's just the transition between the port and the valve seats that have been worked over, to improve flow as there's a ridge there on untouched heads. Also check for green paint at the back of the head behind the distributor. If both these are present then you have an ITR head. Also check if the head has dual valve springs on both intake and exhaust which also is an ITR thing.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Sorry if I sound like a rookie, but you wouldn't happen to have a picture of what the dual valve springs looks like do you?
So these springs will be going both sides of the head? Damn I'm a rookie, gotta learn sometimes.
Oh yea one more thing. The other guy mentioned this "to improve flow as there's a ridge there on untouched heads". I don't know where to look for that.
