ok so there's been a loud thumping sound and shaking coming from the front of my wifes 97 civic ex for months now and trying to figure out what it might be. it's the loudest a 2-3K rpm, and of course the faster you go the faster it sounds. i first thought it was the front rotors going out b/c that's kinda what it sounded like. replaced it w/ new front rotors/pads but didn't help. also thought it might be the wheel bearings but had the car jacked up and tried pushing/pulling on the front wheels but there's no play. so now i'm guessing it's the axles. i only thought the axles makes clicking noise when you turn? anyone ever had this annoying problem before?

 

Could also be a wheel bearing.

sometimes the inboard joint of the axle.. by the transmission.. if it starts to bind a little itll cause vibrations, shaking when accelerating.. i dunno about a thumping noise.. might be a hard/high spot in the tire?

 

Make sure the tires and wheels are properly mounted and balanced. My buddy had a set on his GSR that were balanced and it sounded alot like what youre describing.

 

i guess i'll check the ball joints this weekend and if it still looks good then i'm just gonna go ahead and change the axles...

 

any other suggestions?

 

When you guys ran over that cyclist over last week, did you remember to remove the carcass from underneath the car? Flesh and bones tend to hide in the smallest places under a car.

 

no..i'm sure there isn't any body under there, plus i didn't even go to the bicycle race this past weekend..

 

Wow. Since everyone's throwing parts at it, just put a front clip on it, powertrain and everything. I'm sure that'll fix it.

Ever bother to check the tires? Thumping noise....hmm...heard someone a few posts up mention a flat spot....or....Shifted cord/belt? Swap the tires front to rear before you spend more money on **** you don't need.
