you could go for it, but just make sure you can pay it all back within the "introductory" term. spending invisible money is not too smart, cuz in most the cases it gets way out of hand
so as long as you're sure you can handle it, go for it

Do a budget in excel.
Find out how much you make each month after taxes.
List all your essential reoccuring expenses each month. (Telephone bill, Gas, Toll, Cable Bill, etc..)
Subtract that from your earnings for a month.

This is how much you can save or (if you want to) waste each month.
Now list all the non-essential stuff you want to budget for each month. (movies, food, dinner, clothes, savings etc..)
Subtract that from what you have to waste.

That is how much you can afford to waste on your car each month.. If for the next 12 months that totals more than $5000, then heck.. go for it!

coming from someone who has totally ruined there credit by fixing up a car that they dont even own anymore i give you this advice.

"if you dont have enough cash to buy it right now without the card then you donot need it"

if you were to get a part time job making 10 bucks an hour and 20-30 hours a week you would be able to buy that complete swap in 2 months.

credit card debt is

totally unrelated but I noticed you said you have a "GOOD" paying job at best buy... I worked there for 3 years, and I can tell you now, you are either a store superviser OR an installer... I worked inside the store selling stuff for a year, 7 bucks a hour ( pretty shitty ), then I went to the install bay ( 11-13 bucks a hour, not bad for a 17 year old teen )... So which are you ?? I miss the discount, but I got lots of buddies that work there, and they hook me up...

If that is you ONLY credit card/loan then buy that sexy little motor, but if you are already paying on one, then just wait ( I have one 2,000.00 card no more, no less )

One more thing ( Best buy does what will benifit best buy, I wouldn't ever say the words " job security" around that place. ( They fired my friend a week after he told them he was taking a 3 month " leave of abense " to goto basic training to fight for are country ) and he was giving them a 4 months notice.

They fired me for a good reason though, I backed a S10 into a blazer, hehe.. opps.

Im going to the glendale campus in Illinois so far they have gotten all my financial needs taken care of.

BTW....I work on the floor at best buy in video, I make 7.50 an hour and work about 25 hours a week part time........Im just loaded right now because im the assistant aquatics manager at a fitness center(head lifeguard so to speak) where I make bank...and I work about 35 hours a week there.....so im using that to save up......and I get to relocate to the Best Buy in Glendale where Ill be put on as Full-time.

Im kinda thinking id be better off getting the body kit and a ZC as planned.....and ust keep saving and making payments....build up the credit more and more...

credit card debt is not cash in your pockets. Sooner or later, your gonna have to pay it back... but with interest later on.

See thats the beauty of it...IM excellent with making my payments, I made payments on my truck for almost 2 years before I bought my rex outright...never missed one payment...

Most likely Ill get the ZC though becuae my payments monthly wont be much at all and Ill pay prob. half or 3 quarters of what I owe....remember guys I already have good credit due to buying 100 dollar items and not even making payments.... just paying it all off after the first statement...

I jsut think I want a ZC though ease of swap.....later b16 swap....cheap as hell to Id rather get a kit (maybe) as well and finally get my car painted.

IM excellent with making my payments

If you get 5,000 in debt and make the minimum payment each month it will take you well over 20 yrs to pay it off once the interest starts to compound.

Like everyone else said, start saving and budgeting your money and do it that way. I have over 20k in limits on my credit card and the most I have had on it was 1500-2000, but then again I pay off my cc bill every month. I have seen many of my friends get up to their eyes in credit card debt and it takes forever to get back out.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Default I wouldn't

I'm going to be one of the few that says don't do it. My reason is this: the swap will have the obvious easily budgeted costs figured in (we'll say $2500 for everything). So you're going along, life's great. So you figure why not go ahead & spend another $1000 on accessories (that new timing belt, clutch and maybe some cam gears or whatnot). So now you're at 3500 and happy. So you let it sit for a couple months until you start the install. But all of a sudden when the swap gets started up you realize you HAVE to have X part, or Y compenent, and it's just not going to work unless you have this $200 part. Now multiply this occurance by 5 or 6. Trust me, it happens in EVERY project...and that's the quickest money to be spent (at least I know for me it's that way)....the, "I just want to be friggin done, so I'm going to spend out the *** just to get this project done" costs. Now you're way over your original budget. Best thing I guess would be to try and budget in these "hidden" costs...but that's always difficult. Anyways, I'd say if you're making enough, just save for it. I'm getting the impression you are going to wait until you get into UTI to put it in, just save up however much money you can per month and then buy the motor & whatnot when you have the facilities available. It's amazing how quickly money spends with cars & performance.

Just playing devil's advocate here,

Ryan P.

I'm saying don't do it unless you can pay cash. Here's why, you plunk down $5,000 of work on credit, then you go out and have an at fault accident, you may not have insurance that covers the extra work you put into it (damned expensive at your age) or it gets stolen. So then you have no car AND a $5,000 debt to pay. Wait till you have cash set aside before you do any of that, and then you have to consider school also. You'll be surprised how little you have after you start. Been there done that.
