the gear cone on 3rd gear is probably worn smooth, causing the grind. If that is the problem, scuffing the gear cone may fix it. If that doesnt fix it, or it is too far out of spec, then a new third gear set is probably what you will need, which is not cheap, even if you can do the work yourself.

the idea behind it is that the gear cone acts like a brake rotor that is glazed by the pad. The synchro itself operates in a similar way to a brake pad on the cone, and over a lot of mileage, the cone will be worn smooth by the sychro. Replacing sychros that arent really damaged doesnt fix the problem. The only thing you can do is rough up the gear cone with some sand paper which will cause the synchro to bite harder when you shift, which will eliminate the grind, if the gear cone itself is not too far out of spec. If it is, the only thing you can do to properly fix it is to buy a new third gear set.

oops, didn't see the secon post throughly. that should explain it basically.

The Synchro's are made of Brass btw. Brass are softer than metal and can be easily worn.

I doubt a transmission will go out of alignment unless the bolts are loose and etc. Theres only one way a transmission goes, theres no alignment needed to be done. Only a bolt on cable tranny.

Unless you are talking about automatic transmission. Never messed with them before.

Well GL to you, it can be the shift forks as well. But I have the same problem, but instead I just bought a better transmission.

The 3rd gear synchro on Honda transmissions are known to go bad.

This problem just developed on my CRX as well.

If it's the 3rd gear syncro, would that cause a problem in shifting from 1st to 2nd? Mine doesn't want to shift at all but the clutch pedal feels fine.

Can I change the transmission fluid to buy myself some more time? Hasn't been changed in over 50k miles.

Cable d-series second gear grinds are common, and it is probably still the issue i mentioned above. 3rd gear is less common, but the exact same thing happens in 3rd gear as in second when you are shifting fast a lot.

Check your shift linkage bushings and maybe some transmission fluid.

good point, shift linkage bushings and bad motor mounts can also cause a second gear grind

Didn't think to mention the motor mounts...

On my front transmission mount I noticed less than a month ago that both bolts are gone! I'm wondering if this is common or even possible. I'm really hoping the heads aren't sheared off but I will check it in a bit.

5 years with this CRX, 250k miles, replaced just about everything on it to keep it going, and it seems like every day there's new problems with it
