Default Oil Burning Prelude - Need Help

I was wondering, on average, how many miles it takes anyone's prelude 97-01 to burn a quart of oil. I have a '98 Type SH with 155,771 miles. She normally takes about 600 miles or so to burn a quart. But I just checked her and it took like 400 miles....Yikes!

I am wondering if she is about to take a **** on me or if those numbers are average. I rarely hit vtec and never drive her hard. I know its sacriligous but I get pretty good mpg while having a light foot and keeping under 4K rpm.

Please email me any thoughts or comparisons. I would really appreciate it. My email is bhenso7@aol.com

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

if i understand you correctly, you're saying your lude burns through a quart of oil only 600miles after an oil change. If so, WOW!

You just about described my 98 SH. It's the oil control rings that are the problem. Are sure there aren't any oil leaks? What you need are new rings, but until you fix the problem, nothing bad will happen as long you keep the oil topped off.

yea sounds like the rings or you may just need to use a thicker oil....

Check vigorously for leaks before you come to that conclusion.

("HYOK HYOK" (laughing of a moron/idiot) why don't you'all use some o that leak stop chemical things you put in your motor?)

I wouldn't say go to a thicker oil. Stick with 5w30 just use a quality synthetic brand for a couple months and see if the burning lessons.

A thicker oil would likely cause More friction which would generate more heat, which would likely burn oil more easily?!, thats what I would think anyway.

I would say use the same viscosity your motor is suppose to run with, and go with an oil that can handle the higher temperaters that our hot running high reving honda motors opperate at. (this is all my thoughts, if its wrong please inform me)

There's a lot of wrong/bad information in this post. If you're not sure, don't post anything.

Although, ludes burn alot of oil more so while in vtec. If your using a quart per 600 miles and have no leaks ( seepage is normal, dripping isnt) I have a hard time thinking its the rings. More likely its your valve seals or valve guides. These (seals) are more likely to fail just to age rather then mileage. I wouldn't go to thicker oil but stick to stock oil rec unless your running a turbo. Try not going into vtec for a tank full and see if it reduces. Also are you seeing blue smoke when you step on the gas? Try doing a leak down test on the cylinders and a compression test.

Hey I'm going through a quart like every week. I use Royal Purple 5w30 and it gets real expensive lol. I just changed my oil cooler o ring and some seals are leaking but I don't think thats it. I get a bad smell of oil if I floor it and people say I leave a cloud of blue smoke but mainly when I floor it. Compression is good, what else can it be?

Where are the oil control rings?

I have a H22a and it burns a quart a month, and i had all the seals replaced when i did my swap. I do engage vtec alot. And when i punch it it always leaves a white cloud behind. And no oil leaks on the ground.

Okay I think i have part of the answer, most of the oil being burned is the oil that gets recirculated back into the intake. I think the oil catch can mod, can at least stop the white clouds every time you punch the gas. But the oil consumption will remain the same. ha..

I thought it was normal for H motors to burn about a quart every 800-1500 miles? Being that i regularly engage vtec, i dont think thats too bad for my motor.

When the pcv valve closes. oil goes through the other orfice back into the intake tube where it gets burned off by the engine.

Uh not one place in my post did I say anything discussing the operation of the pcv valve. And what does that have to do with "white clouds" when you "punch" the gas?

So I'll say again.....uh no.
