I think they're for women.
Not that I'm sexist or anything, it's just not a car I'd be caught dead in.
Not only that, but uhh...they're pigs. For something that size, I'd want less weight.
It's like "You gotta pay to play" except you're only paying and not playing...

They're good cars imo, but there are some problems with them.
Not that they are especially prone to issues.
Parts can be difficult to find since some parts only came on the del Sol, which in comparison to the Civics, is fairly uncommon.
They're heavier than other Civics of the same years because of the targa top and the way it affects the rest of the chassis.
They come in three trims: S, which came with a 1.5L SOHC non-VTEC for '93-'95 and a 1.6L SOHC non-VTEC for '96-'97; Si, which came with a 1.6L SOHC VTEC; and VTEC, which came with a 1.6L DOHC VTEC engine, but this trim was only out for '94-'97.
It is much easier to make something a little different since fewer people modify the del Sol. I figure they're less commonly seem modified because (1) they're less common generally speaking, (2) there is less of a market for parts and (3 - the lamest) bigoted opinions that certain cars are for girls while others are not.
If you don't want to drive a "girl's car", perhaps the Civic is not the right choice for you to begin with. The truth is many people who aren't in the Honda scene and believe the del Sol to be a girl's car think the same of the Civic too.

i agree, but if you like it, do it. your personal preference.

if you like them then get one. they are fun cars and something a little different than your everyday hatch or coupe. i love mine despite the weight and 'girl car' stigma. if you are out to get everyones approval go with a hatch or coupe. if you want to be a little unique and dont mind getting some hate, the underdog del sol is your car. oh and unless you are planning on doing a swap, get atleast an si. the s has nothing going for it really.
They're heavy for how little they are, but I agree with the people on here, you'll be very happy with it after you throw a swap into it.
well i had owned a 97 si and i loved the dam thing..i regret getting rid of it..the good thing is that not every 1 has them..o yea and the vtec pops pretty dam good ..not like others but better...

That is a retarded statement. We all know by now that you buy the cleanest chassis you can find and put whatever motor you want in it.

This however is true. They are kinda rattle traps though (as any car under $100,000 with a removable roof is). And the roof seals have a tendency to leak on the older ones. Get the updated seals and keep them clean andwiped down with a light coat of Shin-Etsu grease (the Honda parts counter guy will know what your talking about) and you'll be fine. Otherwise they are fine cars, same as any jap-built civic.
I'm neither a Del Sol owner nor a huge fan(I do agree that they look a little goofy in stock form), I'm just getting tired of seeing these cool little pieces of Honda history getting pushed aside and left to die when they have so much potential to be cool.
Btw the uber short wheelbase makes them fun for auto-x

I've always related them to being girl's cars. I guess because in highschool, i had 2 friends who were female that had them. One green, one red.
They can be made to perform, and look decent, however.

the back window doesnt leak. it is usually the seals around the targa top and windows. this happens because they get old and worn like any other part on a car. they can be purchased from honda or if you can find a newer sol in a pull-yard. the back window is actually recessed into the 'sails' so i can usually roll with it down while it is raining with no worries :]

Spot on info
I really loved my del Sol...it had a GSR with bolt ons so it was just as fast as a (heavier) Integra, it handled like **** (S model, no sway bars), but I loved to drive it.
NOFX, I don't think I've ever seen the Civic called, in general, a chick's car. As far back as I can remember (mid 90's) it was for young, stupid dudes
Maybe you hear about it being a chick car because you drive it
The del Sol is the girl's car of Hondas though, but for a real reason: most of the del Sol's I see are actually driven by women!
But I don't care about that at all. I loved the little things about this car. The seats are amazing and and you have a little 'cockpit'; I think the shifter is in the perfect location. I thought the targa top was alright but the roll down rear window was way cooler. It was super small, easy to park, the manual steering felt great...wonderful car

they are very nice. depends where you live, but around here I NEVER see any del sols, so for something a little bit different (thats still a honda at heart) its a great little car. I would love one as a summer toy myself
