so my 95 ex over heated on me yesturday and i dont want to do any damage to engine so i need to fix this asap.

what are my possible problems and solutions.

 

RADIATOR FAN NOT KICKING ON, BUSTED COOLANT HOSE,BLOWN HEADGASKET

 

The first things I would check are to see if the fan is turning on while idling and warm/hot, and check your coolant levels. I had a small small leak in my radiator, it never gave any problems until last week when the temp started getting ***** high while at a stand still. Turns out I was running pretty low on coolant.

If your coolant is good, then I'd start looking toward the thermostat, cap, head gasket...

 

alright well i was thinking the radiator is old and its the stock one. so maybe replace that first but then again i dont want to buy a new radiator if i dont have to.
im always needing to put water. leak???

now if its the headgasket what is it that im getting myself into a big pain in the *** or not that big of a deal.

 

when should it kick on? just start it and let run see if it turns on?

 

YEAH WEN IT GETS TO MID POINT ITLL CHIL FOR A LITTLE THEN BEGIN TO GET HOTTER THEN FAN SHOULD KICK ON...

 

if you keep putting WATER in your car your throwing the mixture off and your not getting the proper cooling. if your fans ARE kicking on, you should do a pressure check to the radiator and the radiator cap, that will tell you if you need a new radiator or not or a cap. then i would replace the thermostate and see where you are from there. start with the lil things and the cheap things first then go up from there. either way replacing all the cooling system parts is a good idea.

 

yeah im gonna start with the radiator and thermostat. hopefully this solves my problems.
now i dont know if i should replace it with a stock one or get an alluminum one. ive seen acouple of alluminum radiators for cheap on Ebay. any suggestions?

 

cant find my overflow tank. the cap on mine is a lil melted so it doesnt close the right way

 

any?

 

my buddie had the same problem last week and he took out the termostat......

ebay rads are fine im running one and i know lots that do they cool better then the stocker.

1. dont remove the thernmostat its there for a reason even though it opens up and allows water to flow it still creates a blockage that allows the water to remain in the rad longer so that it can actually do its job and cool the liquid. if u run with out a thermostat u actaully run hotter then if u had one.

2.. adding water to the coolant does throw of the 50/50 mixture but does nothing as long as it is distilled. straight water cools better then antifreeze the only reason we use it is so the water dosent freez it has nothing to do with cooling.

3. stop throwing around bad info

 

so really will i need anti freez?

 

When is if over heating? Is it while idling in traffic or does it do it on the highway?

When it is 'overheating' is the fan kicking on?

If you answer these two questions it will help a lot in the diagnosis and should, hopefully, avoid shotgun mechanics.

 

it will act up in traffic but if theres no traffic and i start getting on it it starts to overheat as well.

the first time it ever happened to the fans were woking but now im not sure if they kick on. how can i check if there working?

 

i have a ebay radiator and i love it, works great.

to check it just run your car and let it warm up and see if the fans kick on or drive it around to get it warmed up good then go home park it keep it running and see if they kick on most the time you can even hear them kick on

 

Check your coolant levels. If it is low top it off. Also look for leaks. If you can't find a leak but are still loosing coolant theres a good chance your loosing a head gasket. If your not loosing coolant, start your engine and check to make sure your fan is running.

 

Check your exhaust, especially when you first start the car. Is there any white smoke. If so then coolant is getting by the head gasket. I agree with rsx99. If you don't see any leaks and it is still using
up coolant, it points to a head gasket.

 

well i replaced my thermostat this past monday.the old one look pretty damn beat up. so i filled the car up i put some water wetter and ran it around for a little reving it up really high to see if my temp. would go up. it stood at what im assuming the normal level. went home ran the car fan kicked on plenty of times temp wouldnt go up . i still get a little steam from the radiator so im still looking to get my new aluminum radiator by this weekend my old one has had it, its old and plastic not going to rely on it just better off replacing it.

quick question for those who have a D16 or knows about them where should temp level be at? my car when it wasnt over heating runs a little before half and it would stay at that level.

ill be sure to check the exhaust next time i start the car up in the morning or should i get that white smoke everytime i start it up? ive never seen smoke come out but ill check it should it be really white or where i can barely notice?

 

i replaced my radiator Friday i went with a ebay radiator everything bolted up but the drain valve was leaking alot. replace it and everthing worked fine. took a long *** drive to the beach temp was steady the whole way there and back i think my over heating issues are over

 

good to hear, i never had a prob with my ebay radiator, but yea it should be under half way for normal
