Default LS 5th in B16 Trans

Hello all,

About 12 months ago, my GSR transmission blew. I swapped in a B16, and at the time, heard of many people putting LS 5th gears in them. I decided not to do it at the time, because I just wanted a transmission in my car.

Recently, I began a 30 minute commute to work, all on the highway. I was never really bothered by running at 4,500 RPM's until I did it every day. Also, I'm going to college in the fall, and will be visiting home about once a month, which is a 2 hour drive on the highway.

I know it'll save me money on gas, but is it really worth it? I know it'd be worth it if the transmission was already dropped, but I'd have to take it out again. It'd be done by me, so it wouldn't cost anything in labor, but a couple nights worth of work.

OK, I had the same question at one time. I emailed Larry at Endyne (www.theoldone.com) and he sent me this reply. I think it would be worth it, I plan on doing it myself in the next couple of months.

I can cruise at 70mph at 3000rpm with the LS 5th gear. I never drove the car with the ITR 5th gear, but I can tell you that my ITR runs 4000rpm at the same speed.

Larry,

I was reading your write up on your 89 civic and I had a few questions about the build.

How much did the LS 5th gear reduce your RPM's at freeway speed?

I myself have a 93 Civic VX with a JDM B16a with PR3 head, ITR cams, stock pistons, AEM timing gears, walboro fuel pump, REV hard stage 2 turbokit with stock injectors, FMIC, FMU, stock map sensor, and I have a base tune with CROME, right now I am getting about 28MPG, but at 70MPH I am turning about 3800RPM (195/55/15 tires). I am currently running 7psi of boost but I have not used the turbo "in full boost" because I am wating on my wideband controler to arrive. Any info that you can share will be greatly appricated.

I'd say a 1,000 RPM drop is worth it, especially when I'm in VTEC while cruising down the highway, which is annoying.
