What is a average price for a basic engine rebuild? (B18)
My B20Z is on its way out and I have a dissasembeld B18 sitting in the garage I need to rebuild so I can replace the B20.
The engine had 185,000 miles on it when I took it apart. Cylinder walls and valves look OK, never did a compression test though.
I don't have alot of spare cash so I need to rebuild this engine as cheaply and reliably as possible.
I figure the basic things I need are valve seals, HG, HG bolts, maybe piston rings and bearings. Can I get away without sending the block out to get rehoned and the crank micropolished?
What has the average rebuild cost been for you guys and what parts did you use?

Lets see here, these are some numbers from my rebuilt.
1. Hot tanking, honing and resurfacing the block $200
2. Hot tanking , resurfacing the head and new valve seals. $90
3. Piston rings $40 (NPR from ebay) expect to pay about $100 for OEM
4. New water pump $60
5. New ITR oil pump $100
6. OEM Head, intake, exhaust, valve cover and oil pan gaskets. Around $160
7. New Tensioner and "Gates Racing" timing belt $120
8. ARP head studs and bolts $135
9. Happiness...Priceless
Of course you can re-use most of your parts if you think they are still good.

Thanks for the input guys, I figured it would be 1-2 Gs.

It sucks my B20 didn't last too long. I dropped it in back in February. Never had it tuned, then had a fuel leak that I didn't notice for awhile. Lower and lower compression numbers every week, and tons of metal shavings on the magnetic oil pan plug at every oil change.
I need to have engine ready to go in as I can't afford more than one day downtime with my car. It's my only method of transpo!

It really depends on where you live. I know that different dealerships mark up prices differently. Machine Work is heads or tails on prices. But if you want your car to be a daily driver and never break down on you follow this and do what he did. Basic machine work is worth it.
