'07 SI Clutch failed at 10,000 miles
Hey guys,
I found a 3 page archived thread on the subject but for some reason I was not able to reply, must be forum rules or something. https://honda-tech.com/zero...age=2
Basically my friends SI with 10,000 miles had the clutch fail and the dealer will not honor the warrenty saying upon inspection she has been "racing" it. They made her pay $900 of the $1400 bill.
She is a 30yr old school teacher with not a single mod and I can assure you she doesn't beat on the car. She has also owned several hondas before, all of which were manuals and never had a problem.
Obviously with so many people having the exact same problem something is up. I was wondering if Honda has acknowledged anything yet?
What is her best course of action, Honda USA? BBB? Any help is much appreciated.

There is a big difference between a smoked clutch, and the 3rd gear problem that "so many people" are experiencing. Honda can look at how she's been driving her car from the computer. If she didn't ask to see their proof, and paid anyway, then she is screwed.

Don't know what to tell you. If she honestly knows how to drive manual and has done so for several vehicles prior....then it sounds to me like she just got a "bad apple" in the batch and got screwed by the dealer.
Either that or she leads a double life that YOU don't know about and races quite frequently. Who knows. Either way these cars don't really have problems with the clutches just burning themselves up.

Did you read the thread I linked in post one? It apparently has been a problem for several other SI owners.
I am surprised at how defensive Honda owners are when the reliability of their beloved brand is questioned. I know it is not as widespread as the 3rd gear issue but there is a problem here. Clutchs are not supposed to burn out after 10k when driven by an experienced driver. The fact that Honda wouldnt honor the warranty on this problem is disgusting IMO, I really believe they took advantage of a girl who is not mechanically inclined.

That is probably true maybe you should go up there or another guy I know now and then at parts store or a few times at honda they have giving my girlfriend a hard time unless i go up there too.

I would a agree that a few poeple have had clutch problems. The 3rd gear issue is rampant. I am really tight with the guys at Stevens Creek Honda in my area and they have always been very fair with me, even with my mods. They are looking at my 3rd gear but said they have to experience the problem before they can fix it.
Anyway, if she really feels she was treated unfairly, she should contact America Honda Customer Care. She can state her claim and they will investigate. If they find the dealer had evidence that the clutch was abused (racing, riding, whatever), then they will tell her. If not, she might have a chance to get something back.

Exactly. It's a wear item.

Thats total bullshit. I work for a dealer and I've seen Honda bend over backwards for their customers. Case in point..giving away at 100% goodwill a start clutch in a 96-00 civic hx with 168,000 miles. End of story.

Word. To the max. I, too, work at a dealer. I am amazed at Honda's willingness to stand firm behind their product. I've seen ONE person pay for an IMA battery. And, we've done a TON. A/C systems in CRV's, I've seen only a handful of people who had to pay more than 50 percent at over a hundred thousand miles! Out of any car company, I've seen Honda treat their customers the best. I can't speak for a particular dealership but American Honda is not a blood thirsty company willing to take advantage of anyone they can. I'm speaking because I have worked on thousands of Honda's at my dealership, NOT because I own a Honda and am biased.

It's a wear item my friend. I 'race' quite frequently (and by race, I mean just drive it spiritedly through town) and at 17k, my clutch is absolutely fine. It's the poor driving habits (riding the clutch, accelerating too much while the clutch is half engaged, etc) that wear out the clutch. I will admit, though, that it'd honestly be hard to wear out a clutch in 10k even if you were a poor driver.
