Default Hooked up prelude fog lights, and trying to use Civic fog switch, not working :(

Well here is my issue I picked up a set of 89 Honda Prelude fog lights. I also picked up a fog light wiring kit from my local auto parts store. I hooked everything up fine. white line goes to fogs, black ground on fog, I hooked up the crappy switch they give you with the kit and it works fine. Turns the fogs on and off, The problem is I dont like the switch, I want to use a OEM Honda Civic fog light switch. I have the switch with the harness cut. I have a red/yellow wire a red/white wire and a black "ground". All I get from the Honda switch is a constant green light, both on and off, but will not turn on fogs.

Anyone run into this before? Hell anyone try it? Thanks!

Also do I need a relay?

the switch is a low amperage ground send.

ground the black wire and check for continuity with a digital multimeter by pressing it, to find your output wire. its most likely the red/yellow but its helpful to check. if you dont have a multimeter, you can use tiral and error with a relay to find you output wire as well.

the third wire (most likely red/white) is going to be a positive illumination for the tiny bulb inside the switch itself. it would tie into the illumination circuit of your car. basically the positive parking light wire to tell the little bulb inside the switch when you have your lights on.

as to your issue with the switch itself working, that red/yellow is most likely a low amperage ground send meant to trigger a relay.

on a standard SPDT relay, you would run this wire to pole 85, and run a fused constant (+) to 86 and 87. A 10 amp fuse should suffice. 30 would be your output to your lights carrying the needed 12 volts for operation. At that point you would just have to ground the other side of the bulbs themselves someplace under the hood.

if your lacking a multimeter as i said above, any standard relay has two trigger poles, 85 and 86. basically these are always polar opposites, meaning one is ground the other positive. they can be put in either order, its irrelevant since they simply switch the coil inside. so your oem honda switch can hook up to either 85 or 86 as long as you have a fused constant power from the battery on the other side.

a simple way to test if its working, is to push the oem foglight switch, and listen for the relay to audibly "click". if you hear it, then your good to go.

87 in this case is you power input to be sent, and 30 is your output. if you throw a 10 amp fuse on both 86 and 87, that pretty much takes car of the power side of things. if your relay have a center pole, its safe to ignore this since that is for more complex operations that what you need it for.

also, not to confuse you but in this case 30 and 87 can be put in either order as well, since your basically using the relay as a light switch. the circuit really wouldn't know the difference.

basically bc honda is very smart they always avoid sending 12 volt through anything if they can avoid it since ground triggers are much safer and reliable. they have been doing it for over 25 years and it took the amercian car manufactures about that long to realize this is why it made toyotas and hondas so much more electrically reliable. and don't even get me started on german made cars, omg nightmares.

your aftermarket kit is essentially sending its 12 volt through the switch down that white wire, i believe based on what you said.

ok here is your problem..
the light on your oem switch stays "green" because it is constantly getting power sent to it. with the oem fog light harness the power for the switch is sent via the head light switch and power is only sent to the fog light switch when the headlight switch is in the "on" position. you need to wire up the power wire from your harness to the fuse box accesory slot and your problem is solved.

Thanks for the feedback!

Nobody really said yes or no so, do I need a relay? Does the OEM Honda switch require it? Can I use a relay from like autozone/advanced auto etc?

Ugh still no luck

Only difference is the light is not a constant green on the switch, just wont turn on the damn fogs. Im using a relay now also "40 amp if it matters" Think its time to have my wiring buddy come over

Appreciate all the help

the first time you hooked the honda switch up to power and didnt use the relay you fried the switch, they are only meant to handle less that 5 amps your fogs are probably 15 amps, time to find a new switch

Make sure you have a relay in the line, also a fuse. You might have to tap into your wire harness for your headlights, there will be a open slot you will have to use so the light turns on only when the headlights are on.

so i got my relay to work, but the thing now is that in the on position the fogs are off and in the off position the fogs are on. is there any way to fix this or to somehow reverse the polarity.

I was lucky to pick up a stock fog wiring harness, It sounds like you pretty much need to tap into that harness like I mentioned in the steering column, and use that for your power source, they will only come on when the headlights are on.

I couldn't get mine to work otherwise.

I feel your pain, also might want to consider getting crx_si-r harness he sells, its setup exactly the same as the OEM harness, might make it alot easier

question regarding fogs, i have my fogs wired with out a relay, but they are kinda dull. If i wire a relay will this increase the light output from the fog lights?

it will not increase the output unless you are using too thin of a wire now, if you are using 14ga-12ga it should be fine even for 100watt bulbs. if you are using 18 gauge you might benefit from a relay since the power has less to travel, also make sure your grounds are good
