Default In and out of OVERDRIVE on a '93 HELP!!

My '93 4-cyl LX has been quickly going in and out of overdrive (D4) when maintaining a constant hwy speed. Right now this is intermittant and I am wondering if there is some sort of sensor that controls this..... It goes into the D4 gear fine, it is just having some problems staying there. Is there a sensor or something that needs to get cleaned out?

BTW, the fluid has been regularly changed and it is still clear and does not smell burnt or anything like that.

Try replacing the thermastat. A stuck open thermastat will cause the overdrive (torque convertor lock-up) to engage/disengage. Overdrive gets engage at opertating temperature, open thermastat equal incorrect opertating temperature.

I've had the thermostat replaced about two years ago and those problems haven't resurfaced so I don't think its that.

Someone said it might be the O2 sensor. How do I tell if the O2 sensor is gone? I don't want to replace it unless it is really gone because it costs so much $$$$$.

there are only 2 reasons your car will slip in and out of over drive

1. ecu sees a temp problem with engine (IE not up to operating temp)
2. problem with trans

if your t-stat is OK, check your temp sensor.......
