Maybe you can help with my decision....
So i've determined myself to be the most indecisive person on earth. I've driven a local 00 FBP itr 3 times now. Considering it has 90k miles, its in great condition, all stock except for i/h/e. I currently own an 04 r32 http://i114.photobucket.com/al...1.jpg
Only selling because I'd like to get rid of my loan and have no car payment. I consider myself a honda guy at heart... but have had alot of different cars... I've really gotten used to the luxuries of my r32 (excellent interior build quality typical of european cars, heated seats, awd, navi, etc etc). An ITR is what I'd say is the epitomy of a well built purposeful car. You can beat the hell out of it all day, and it loves it, it truly is an amazing honda product - great motor, great brakes, great chassis, it all functions together as one, inexpensive to maintain, raw and somehwat rough yet actually practical with cargo space, mpg, etc. All 3 times I've finished driving the local ITR, I get back in my r32, and I'm like I just can't own the itr as my only car (I could 2 years ago when iw as used to hondas, but now now). I determined last night that the itr was ruled out of the picture. Yet today, I'm wanting to drive it again (perhaps this is what the ITR is all about hehe). I'd like an e36 m3 or b5 s4 but both have higher maintenance costs, particularly the b5 s4 (they're maint ******). I love the "package" of a european car, but I love money more, and euro cars cost a lot of money to maintain. Even If I get an incredibly well maintained s4 or m3, I'd hate for something crazy to happen. ITR - woudln't even phase me.
Does anyone have any advice for me? I don't live an area where I'd be worried about theft (it'd also be garaged) and quite honestly I firmly believe that people in NJ, NY, chicago, socal have taken itr theft to an extreme. As nsxtasy showed with his poll, the actual rate of theft is low at 4.8%.
This is the 3rd time I've considered getting an ITR, each time, I find some reason not to get it. Any thoughts are appreciated. And lastly the final car I've thought about is a plain ole 01-02 is300... very quality car, but boring... but sometimes I wonder, do I really care, they're great cars.

I'm strongly against owning an ITR as an only car. What happens when you visit your girlfriend at her apartment. What about the mall, movies, etc? These are all hypothetical but I feel you may be underestimating theft. I would also recommend PM'ing user: wrx-eater-sti-killer if the purchase is made. Make the investment into a quality alarm and install you can trust and put faith in.
That being said, I think you cover the strong points of the car very well. Purpose built, yet practical. Great gas, tons of storage space, and a blast to drive. The motor screams and actual wants you to take it up into high RPMs.
Its your call, I know what I would do.

ok heres the thing, if your all into euro lux. then your gunna hate the r. all we have lux is power sterring and a/c. No offense but I don't consider you a honda guy, to me a honda guy is die hard. I will never own any vehicle other than a honda, and when I see an expensive car, i.e. bmw viper, porsce, i think to myself what an idiot he coulda put that 70k into a civic. To me thats a honda guy. Now as a honda enthusiast the ITR is very special to me, I have dreamed of having one since I got into cars. There is no substitute. Personally It doesnt sound like you will feel the same, which isnt a bad thing and I dont mean to poo poo you away from an ITR, but I think you would be more comfterable in something a bit more lux.
man i am sorry i just rereadmy post and i sound like a dick. dont take it personal. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by coolhandluke »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I'm strongly against owning an ITR as an only car. LOL jdm "I sound lke a dick" no worries dude...
Its my opinion that I think YOU are crazy and you just haven't spent enough time in a car with more amenities. "hes an idiot for not putting 70k into a civic" . I'm sorry but thats not being a honda guy, thats being a mf'ing retard extraordinaire. You'd take a civic with 70k in it over a brand new z06, m3, or rs4, you're an idiot. I love cars, I'm not particular to one brand persay. I like hondas in the fact that every honda I've owned has been reliable and their buidl quality shows thru in the fact that honda makes **** which doesn't haveabunch of quirks (aka euro cars).

Stick with your euro luxo cars since it blends in perfect for all the yuppie housewife at the malls so no thief worries. Why waste time getting your hands dirty and makings some unreliable hatchcrap when you can ride in comfort. The R is blast to drive seldom, not for daily life. It is wise to have another comfortable daily ride for the office in taken care of business.

I'd take a stock Civic over any of those cars.
IMO, Europe hasn't built a decent car since the '80s, and most of the "amenities" found in more upscale vehicles are just unnecessary junk that weigh down the car and will eventually cause problems by breaking.

You can't be serious? Some of the best cars on the market are built in Europe. Just to name few: Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.....

I have my R as a daily driver, but I live in a place where theft is pretty low. I can drive my R to work or the mall without too much worry. I mean a car is meant to be driven, not sitting in a garage. If you are fully aware of the responsibilities of owning an R, I don't see a problem of you owning one.
The big question is, are you ready to buy an R? We shouldn't sway you in any direction.

Yeah, I've actually owned cars made by two of those marques.
Mercedes built wonderfully over-engineered cars until about 1990. The cars they build today are ugly and not terribly reliable.
BMW sucks. They have always sucked, and they will always suck. Any company that puts strut suspension on $80,000 cars is not worthy of my respect. And I don't care for their history of releasing engines before they're fully developed. Anyone remember what happened in the early '90s when they introduced their V8s? How 'bout more recently with the early S54 motors blowing up on tracks? And let's not forget that the new M3 weighs about as much as a V8 Mustang. No thanks.
Audi builds some good-looking vehicles with nice engines, and even uses a proper double wishbone front end. Too bad they put those engines so far forward of that double wishbone front end that the cars end up plowing like lawn darts. And again, they're not terribly reliable. Audi has a long history of electrical and transmission problems.
As for Volkswagen, you should talk to my friend who bought a loaded new Passat in March. The car has been in the shop for problems more times in four months than my Integra was in 12 years. That's not an exaggeration. In fact, it's in the shop again right now. It's the same story with my other friend's Jetta. And all of their cars have struts.
My favorite car in the world is a Jaguar. Unfortunately for Jaguar, it was introduced in 1961, and they haven't built anything that comes even close to comparing to it in decades. Today, you can't even get a Jag without a freaking PRNDL. What do I want with an automatic-equipped car?
Ferraris may be fun, but they're too damn expensive and impractical for me. If I had a chance to get an old 308 GTB, I'd snap it up. But I don't think I'd ever spend $200,000 on a new car regardless of who makes it.
Lamborghinis are also too expensive, and they're not as good track cars in most cases as Ferraris. And these days, they share too many parts with Audi to justify their outrageous price. Lamborghinis were built more to be seen in than anything else, and I wouldn't want to be seen in one of those Italian *****-stretchers.
And for one you neglected to mention, I think Lotus makes a hell of a track toy with the Elise. But it's not exactly something you can drive every day, so I don't consider it a real car.
So yeah, I am serious.
And lest you think I'm some kind of Honda die-hard, I have to say I don't care for their new offerings either. The new Accord is too big IMO, and it looks awful. The Civics all have struts now, and I think the dashboard was designed by the same guy who did the '92 Prelude's interior. Come to think of it, there is not a single new car on the market today that I actually want.

Dude you compared every single brand to racing. Audi and bmw aren't trying to make track cars. They're making street cars. So according to your outstandingly bad analysis, a car isn't quality unless it can perform perfectly on the track, it doesn't weigh alot, it has no mechanical issues, etc. Absurd.

Street cars huh, m6 is a street car, not for racing? you asked guys who drive hondas if theyd rather a euro car, just to let you know most honda guys hate vw. kinda a rivalry going on there. audi and vw r the same piece of ****. they break. mercedes are some of the highest maint cars on the road, also a piece, theyre not practical. Actually, I said very little about racing.
Just to be clear, I think a car is quality if it is well-engineered and reliable. But it isn't desirable unless it also has low mass, excellent handling, and a reasonably powerful engine.
IMO a car isn't worth having if it:
* Weighs more than 3,000 lbs. (performance-oriented) or 3,500 lbs. (family sedan)
* Costs too much
* Has MacPherson Strut suspension
* Uses too much fuel (anything less than 20 mpg city)
* Is not reliable
* Is too prone to understeer
* Is not available with a manual transmission
* Will not carry a week's groceries
But that's just my opinion, and you did ask for it. It sounds to me like you think a car is cool if it impresses other people and has a lot of gadgets in it. That's fine, if that's what you like, but my own standards are higher.
P.S. I don't hate VW. I just wouldn't buy a new one. I used to own a 1974 Karmann Ghia, though.

I don't care what you hate... I'm not a vw fan. The only reason i bought my r32 is the overall package it presents. I hate most vw owners, i hate most car people in general cause they dumb and have ridiculous brand preferences that end up making no sense. theres a rivalry between honda and vw owners? Thats news to me! The image I get from that is you and your "honda buddies" cruising on friday nights having "wars" with vw's. Grow up man.
jdmeg - you're 20 dude, if you owned more cars than just your 3 hondas, you might think differently. I care the least about your opinion. You're not a car guy lol. You're an illogical nuthugger of a brand.
mkultra - you must not like many race oriented or sports cars. The mpg, and reliability are the deal breaker for you. "It sounds to me like you think a car is cool if it impresses other people and has a lot of gadgets in it. I buy cars for my own personal enjoyment, not the crowd, not other people. I buy cars that are all around nice and make me happy.

</TD></TR></TABLE>
I'm sure that all of the European car companies would love to have you as a lead design engineer since you seem to know everything about cars.
