DLC Data Link Connector, 98 Accord LX, VTEC 4 Cyl, Obtain Codes Manually?

DLC Data Link Connector, 98 Accord LX, VTEC 4 Cyl, Obtain Codes Manually?
Well maintained vehicle; everything works. Recent MIL lamp illuminated/stays on; am trying to ascertain the source/issue.
16 pin DLC on vehicle uses pins 4, 5, 7, 9, 14 and 16. Which are the 2 correct pins to connect, for manually reading stored DTC codes, via flashing MIL/CEL lamp (long and short flashes/pulses technique)?
Have seen other documentation on this subject depicting different DLC and other numbered pins in use; also warning posted when connecting incorrect pins, can damage other onboard equipment.
Am seeking the experienced/experts to clarify this issue. Appreciate any assistance. Did try to instant message another member on this subject; however, I'm "Trial" member status, and that feature is not yet available. Thanks again for any help.
