my friend has a k20 swapped 1999 civic coupe, it is putting down about 220 to the wheels. my question is he cant get any traction in first gear at all so what is the point of having all that horsepower in such a light car if you cant even get the tires to stick. he has good tires too.

 

Wider wheels/tires, stiffer suspension, his tires might not be the best either. There are a lot of factors that can be causing no traction.

 

how much do traction bars help

 

traction bars will help alot if they are dialed in correctly

got done with my k24 swap into eg no traction too and the traction bar no use and for the money for the traction bar i prefer some drag radial tires.

 

so exactly my point if we cant get traction why not just use a b16!!!!

 

oh and the tires are nitto neogen 205/40/16

 

and if u have a b16 and make 200hp u wont have traction neither... theres more to doing a motor swap and turboing a engine and yada yada.. u have to look at the whole picture.. its not impossible to get traction but u arnt gonna be able to with stock equipment..

because the suspension and what not are made to handle that much on those cars, it's not the same stuff that would be on a chevy cobalt or something. upgraded motor means they have to upgrade everything else

 

he has a coil over setup with nitto neogen 205/40/16 tires.. what else is there to do... feather the clutch??

Did you seriously ask that. Civic = FWD, Vette= RWD, its called weight transfer.
When you step on it in a FWD the front lifts taking traction away. In a RWD the front lifts and the back squats loading the rear wheels giving more grip. Not to mention a corvette is actuall designed to be a sports car, a civic is not.

 

Tell him to look up a stickier tire. Something like the Falken Azenis RT615 or some sort of super sticky street tire. Throttle control helps too.

 

I am not trying to hate, but the neogen tire's are still just street tires you should tell him to look into the nt01, they would for sure handle some power. and as far as the corvette comment goes you have to understand that a car is designed around the motor and vice versa so gear ratios and hp to wieght ratio and wieght transfer and spring rate hieght and all that other crap has so much to do with putting it to the ground. like everybody else said you cant just go and throw a high powered motor in a stock chasis, and even when you do get all the suspension and bushings and everything else, the suspension has to be tuned for what you want (street, track, drag) so it is a neverending problem. I am looking at trying to fit a 245\50\16 up under the fender for the track. I just havent come up with the money to figure out what offset I need to make it work. it will for sure stick out the side but all that meat to ground means great ET's. but if the k20 is such a problem then you can always give it to me I dont mind having to much torque for the chasis.

 

Agreed. Traction bars, pic suspension, new shoes and tires, and maybe a driving lesson? I don't seem to have trouble with mad wheel spin in my hatch at all then again i really don't rip it on the streets much at all, but the highway is a different story tell him to cruise the highway in search of some evos. That should help him forget his traction issues

 

L2 launch. 220 should not cause traction issues yet.

exactly but that k20 puts down more torque than a b series would @ 220 but it is still manageable.. there are soo many other cars out there beasting and still gripping enough so your friend just needs to do some more research & use a bit of common sense

My experience with Azenis shows that they are not straight line tires i used to spin through 1rst from a 1rst gear roll and then spin 2nd then grip towards the end.. but they held so well around sweepers and corners etc...

 

I know but I was just thinking of a tire that had some practicality. It's a great street tire. I didn't know how concerned the OP was with tire wear or what sort of racing he does.
