Rough Idle and Rust
Hi,
I habe a 97 Accord EX 2 door. The car idles pretty rough when the A/C is on and the automatic is in gear. Any ideas?
Also I live in Michigan. My car does not have an rust yet, but you see a lot of 94 Accords driving around that have rust at the front and rear wheel wells. Did Honda change something for the 97 or is my car also likely to start rusting there? If yes, is there a way to prevent it?
Thanks

The idle is normal, considering that the drivetrain and the AC are both causing drag to the engine. Try throwing the car into neutral at a stop and see how much it improves.
5th gen (94-97) Accords are notorious for rear wheel well rust, but as long as it isn't driven in salty conditions (i.e. beach or states that use salt on snowy roads) you will probably be okay.

And here lies the problem, I live in Michigan, so a lot of salts on roads in winter. Is there anything I can do to prevent the rust? Would for example giving it a car wash once a week in winter help?
It may, but the problem is the rust starts between the fender and the wheelwell, where two sheets of metal are welded together. You can try to scrub and wash in there, but I can't guarantee it'll work. Your best bet would be to get some of those rubber undercoating spray cans from AutoZone and try your best to coat all the seams under the fender to keep water from getting through. Also, I'm to understand that water can get into that little pocket from above, too. So good luck trying!
my car has been giving me this problem for almost a year now. Yes close to a year
the only diff. is that it only does it to me when the engine is cold or when i have let it sit for 2h and the engine is still warm .
idle speed falls to low levels that it revus up again , if i drive it it will hesitate
but it only does it for lets say a few secons like 10secs or so then its ok
3 diff computers 9 2 mechanic sops, 1 dealer)have tested my car and all 3 of them said nothing is wrong
i have even checked the tranny and it is ok
so i give up . i will have to just let it warm up before i drive it ....
