Default searching for power.. with the B16B

Hello all... I've been loving my B16B but it's time for more. It's difficult to make decisions with an R motor because normally i'd just get a bunch of type-R stuff to make the motor better..but it's already got it! lol later on (next year) i'm going to get into the block and headwork.. but for now i've decided that cams are the best choice.

I already have a 2.5" exhaust, a tri-Y MaximSpeed header (random JDM company, discovered that they produce Toda headers) that i love, and a random short-ram. I'm going to build a 3" with a BPi to replace the short ram.

I've been researching cams, and so far the BC Spec III has interested me. Several people have used them with the Portflow/ITR setup -- is the CTR valvetrain sufficient? I will obviously be upgrading valvetrain at a later date but I'm just curious to see if the CTR springs/retainers can get me by.

Is there a better cam option out there (performance/price)?

Of course they will be installed with adj. cam gears and the necessary fuel tuning stuff.

appreciate it!

all you have to do is.... swap out the crank for a gsr/type r unit and change out the rods for a gsr/type r unit...

then you will have a b18c5 type r motor basically that says b16b...

check out http://www.inlinefour.com spoon sells a kit that does this for a grand or so.. but if you find the parts yourself you can do it for cheaper...

you would gain.. a lil more hp, and lots more tq

good luck

i was in the same boat when i first got the b16b, i came to two conclusions:

-swap out the crank for a gsr/itr (with matching rods)
-boost it

i chose to boost it. Thats not to say you cant make power staying 1.6 it just might be more difficult. now i do recall reading an article of Guillitines[sp?] car that had a b16b with BC flat faced valves, BC thin hg, BC valve train and BC IV cams and the damn thing made like 190whp! i dunno if that was a one time fluke but something to ponder... good luck...

I went through the same things a couple of years ago. I ended up running Pro 1's with a gsr crank and itr rods & pistons. I have loved the results with more torque and still retain the high revs. The best thing I did though was remove the engine from the EM1 and put it in a 300lbs lighter hatch.

yeah, I'm probably going to do the "oem stroker kit" (as i've come to call it) next year. right now just for simplicity (and i can't do the downtime) i just want a slightly more aggressive set of cams.

thanks guys, glad i'm not the only guy with the little R motor

If you do the spoon stroker kit.. That motor will be badass.

CTR transmission itself is pretty short, but 4.9FD is also a nice option to have.

its not that short, just as short as any other b16 tranny and people put FD's in them all the time...
