Default type s pistons

just a curiosity question, do you need to sleeve the block if you only have forged pistons? say for example i have type s pistons and forged rods, does the block still need to be sleeved?

i understand the importance of the sleeves but are they necessary if only the rods are forged?

thanks in advance
