Default why notch the pistons?

I see this done alot on turbo motors, what is the exact reason? Also is this something that you would do to forged pistons or only oem ones?

(I searched and found nothing.)
thanks!

you dont notch the pistons, you notch the block. most aftermarket rods are wider than

stock(d16). without notching, the rod would hit the block.
