They'll hold, but not well.

I did this with a set of fat fives and I ended up losing a couple of lugs while driving (wasn't aware of it til I got home) but I guess because the lugs don't seat properly on the wheel, it got loose oever time while driving.

I pay particular attention to my wheels/lugs when I drive, so I guess I got lucky and caught the missing lugs before things got worse (I was doing my 30 mile check after installing lugs). Most people probably slap on wheels and forget about it.

It's not safe. As noted above, it's easy for the lugs to work loose, and yes, it can lead to bent or broken studs.

Two suggestions. One, you could ask him if he'll swap lug nuts with you, assuming he's using lug nuts with the ball seat for his wheels right now. Otherwise, you can buy lug nuts with the ball seat at your local auto parts store. I know they're a little over a buck apiece at Autozone.
