1993 Honda Accord EX 4-DR 115K - Car Won't Restart After Turnoff
What's going on guys? I'm a first time user trying to get some info regarding a problem I am having with my Accord. The problem with my 93 Accord EX is that the car is having a hard time restarting right after I turn it off. The car will crank but for some reason it won't start. There have been instances where I'll turn on the key and the car almost starts but dies again. I'll have to step on the gas peddle to give it a boost. If I wait about 5-10 mins the car will start again. I bought a new battery about 3 years ago and changed my alternator about the same time. My windows, lights, and stereo works fine without shutting off.
The problem started happening about 2 weeks ago, but I've had the same problem for sometime now ever since I purchased the car. The problem seem to occur much often now than it did before. Someone mentioned the problem could be the Main Relay but others think it has something to do with my fuel injectors.
Any thoughts?

One other thing, my car doesn't die out once my car starts and I'm driving. Hope these information will help you guys diagnose the problem for me. Thanks
Watch your check engine light. When you turn the key on ( don't start the engine ) the light should come on for a couple of seconds then go out. The moment the light goes out listen for a moderately loud 'click' from behind the dash to the left of the steering wheel. That is the location of the PGM-FI main relay. The sound you are listening for is the engagment of the relay. If you don't hear the click, turn the key to start. I bet the car won't start. If you hear the click, turn the key to start, I bet the car will start.
Let us know how it goes.

Spark, fuel, start... if one of the two isn't working when you try to start your car it won't start. I had this issue with my 93 coupe. It wouldn't start but would turn over. Come to find out the firing order for the sparkplugs were off and the main relay needed to be replaced. I would check both of them first. IF you don't hear your fuel pump kick on when you put the car to the on position (should hear a motor start, other than your antenna) its your main relay which isn't hard to replace at all! I have an extra one thats still brand new if you wanna buy it and take it off my hands.. check out cb7tuner.com this site has some really good information on the cb7 gen!

I agree, it sounds like the PGM-FI Main Relay is acting up.
However, you are not listening for "engagment of the relay" as mentioned, the "click" you should hear is the fuel pump relay disengaging, this is what should happen and can be hard to hear on the Accord, [easier to hold the relay and feel the click(s)]...
When you turn the ign. on, the CEL along with the rest of the cluster lights will turn on, at the same time the PGM-FI Main Relay will "click" two (2) times, [first click is the fuel injector relay turning on, the second click is the fuel pump relay turning on] the "clicks" are very close together so may sound/feel like one click.
Also at the same time the fuel pump will prime, [run for no more then a few sec.].
After that few sec. there is a 3rd "click" from the PGM-FI Main Relay, [ it is the fuel pump relay turning off] the pump will stop priming, the CEL will go out and engine should start.
If any of the above is not happening, the problem is either the PGM-FI Main Relay, [most likely] or wiring to/from it.
I just so happens, as I am posting here, Cires, [a machanic with a shop here in our industrial mall] came over to ask if I know where the PGM-FI Main Relay is in a 99 Honda Accord, because the customer had internittent starting problems, was not starting now, and he could not find it, turns out someone had relocated it a little from its high up to the left of steering column to above the column.
This may relate to your problem because symptoms sound the same, intermittent start, could wait a few min. to start, would sometimes start and then stall, no problem once started and running.
We pulled the relay assembly, I resoldered all the terminals, problem solved maybe, as car now starts, but then again it was in intermittent problem.
The PGM-FI Main Relay is a common problem, but repairable 99% of the time...
