I have a 88 civic and i recently put in an ls, but i can smell gas, its not too bad, but it is noticable. Im thinking the fuel filter is getting very close to shot, cuz the old d series had the same problem, it was worse and rank bad of fuel. Any ideas what it is?
Also the engine kinda bogs down a lil bit, when it does it, i'll just push on the gas harder and then it'll just bog harder and then itll just go. could it be fuel related? or maybe crank shaft related. I honestly have no clue what it is but that's my best guess. I just changed the spark plugs too. So if you know about this to let me know. Thanx much and have a good one!

Is the smell from inside or outside the car? If its inside while you are driving or whatnot, I would check the filler tube first, you know, where you put the gas in.....if it has dry rotted you will smell it bad....
Another thing to check is if your fuel return hose on the pressure regulator is plugged or pinched....
then fuel filter and lines....check the injectors and the rail too.

Ok will do. but it seems like the smell is coming from the front of the car, form the passenger side. so i was thinkin fuel filter. And i might as well change it, cuz i changed the filter line from the fuel rail to the filter and nothing changed. so well see what happens. Thanx for ur help
Hi
I also have this exact problem 16a engine. It is driving along 70 mph and I let off the gas pedal and it starts missing and I push the pedal up and down and then it finally catches. Have you found out what the problem is yet? If so could you please let me know. Thanks

If you can smell it check for any leaks in the fuel lines, see if u can see any fuel hit the ground when your engine is started. Once i had the smell of gas coming from the front, the clamp on the fuel return line was loose.

I had this same problem on my old dsm, check the emissions charcoal canister located on the passenger side firewall...that is if you didn't remove it already. they tend to expire and need replacement. when you shut off your car the gasoline vapors in your gas tank are funneled through piping all the way to the canister so it can filter it before it goes into the atmosphere. these vapors get all backed up if the canister is blocked/expired.
