We just bought a 99 EX for my friend (D16Y8), and so we need to get it saftied and emissions in 2 weeks to get it registered. But the car won't pass emissions, we did all that basic stuff like adding aceton, driving the **** out of it then taking to emission but it stilll wouldn't pass.

I'm having suspissions that the car has been chipped and thats why we're getting such bad numbers. because it pulls really really strong up to fifth gear, I'm wondering how we can figure out if its been chipped and what can we do to reverse it?

I'm going to change the cat and O2 sensors tomorrow morning but I'm affraid that alone won't fix the problem and, buddy's getting really nervous about his purchase since he doesn't know much about cars.

Any help is really appreciated.

well were im from (CT)you can still have your car register for up to a year without it passing emissions..so even if it still fails ,go back to dmv and get your hard plates and you will have up 2 a year to fix the problem..just make sure that your dmv is the same as here in ct..im having the same problem since i did a motor swap on my ek with a b16 motor with harness and i was suposed to keep my ex harness instead so mines wont passs emissions either until i get a ex harness and extend the wires...

what do you mean the harness? what does the harness have to do with emissions? are you talking about the ECU?

ps. I'm in Canada so can't change the dmv, the regulations are pretty tough up here.

SI in Canada is same as EX in the US, should've mentioned that sorry. the ex comes with the D16Y8 right?

most likely it doesnt have a chip in it since its obd2

The guy we bought the car from is an ******* and won't answer his phone, and my buddy's freakin out and wants to sell the car for like 2000$ cheaper, so I need some help with this asap.

 

try changing out the o2 sensors....do you know if its throwing a cel?

 

Is the CEL working and is it ON?

What part of the emissions test is the car failing?

 

The cel has been tampered with, it won't even come on when you first turn the car to ON. I don't know what they've done to it, maybe cut the wire behind the cluster?

I'm swapping his O2 sensor and cat tomorrow with new stuff I've had lying around in my parts bin (thank god) but I'm worried if its chipped its still not going to pass the test so I keep blowing my $$ on emission tests.

Check whether the CEL bulb was removed.

You could also check for codes with a scan tool. Here in the States, some auto parts stores offer this service free of charge.

 

try autozone or some kind of parts store and see what readings the car gives out..
