Default factory tranny...how to tell?

Im currently looking to buy a civic from a private owner...the car has an automatic tranny, but he claims it was a swap for the factory manual. Is there any ez way to tell if hes telling the truth? I was thinkin somewhere on the lines of looking at the vin number or such.

Also what else would have had to be changed along with the tranny, since if I got the car id be lookin to convert it back. My experience is with Toyota, and they have an entirely different ecu for the automatic model... same story with Hondas?

I have never heard of anyone converting from manual to automatic, if that is what you are asking.

Converting from auto to manual not that hard to do, if you have all of the parts. Why dont you just get a manual?

So it was a manual and he switched it for an automatic? its usually always a factory tranny, there should be a sticker next to the engine code but on the tranny.

I wouldn't buy the car, ask him how he converted him, check around the tranny mount, does the mount look welded on? ask him if he bought the mount customized to fit or how he got it to fit. If he cut and welded it, i wouldn't bother purchasing it unless it was super dirt cheap.

so are the tranny mounts actually different? sounds strange considering the tranny came from the same model of car...my concern was more on the computer side of things

only reason im considering the conversion from the start was the car just happened to be close by and i wanted a project car, the tranny just happened to be the catch...i wanted to see if its more trouble than its worth to be converting it.
