New Valve seals on non-vtech sohc ZC, need some advise
1. Can i do the seals with the head still on the car?
2. Do i need to drain the oil for it?
3. Anything else to look into while doing that?

not sure if you have to take the head off to do seals.. if you dont then you dont have to do the HG.... but you might aswell if your doing that much work anyways, that way you dont have to worry about it in the future.
as long as you can make it to toronto in aug.. IDGAF

you can change them with the head on the car, i know that.
and the smoke is blue and it smells liek oil so i dont think that HG needs to be done. But i agree that it wont take that much more to change it all. so i dunno...

no, the headgastket is probably fine.. its either rings or valve seals.. i wouldnt be suprised if you replaced the seals and it ended up being rings though.. you should get a leakdown test before you do anything misha.
ill try to find out more if i HAVE to do the HG as well. If not ill just do the seals and if it still a bitch well do the rings when in To im sure it will make it there,
Bump for the head gasket solution!

yea you can change them in the car ,get a leak down tester hook it to the air compressor as usual make sure it's not the rings or head gaskets etc
pull off the valve cover ,timing belt (change it while your at it),pull the cam and rockers, heres when the leakdown tester will save you *** ,put the crank on tdc for #1 and #4 turn the leakdown tester on all it can go ,get out you valve spring compressor (clamp and dial type)compressor ,pull off the springs ,keepers ,and retainers then the seals put it back together in reverse order .
repeat for #4
turn the crank to tdc on #2 and #3
repeat

haha.. i dont want to replace the rings though.... so much work. im lazy. i thought this was the reason for putting a new engine in your car so you didnt have to deal with burning oil? lol come to toronto and buy a good zc
You do need to do a leakdown test to determine whether or not its the rings or the valve seals. By valve seal, I mean the valve openings in the cylinders, which would mean you do need to remove the head. A leakdown test puts air pressure in a cylinder whos valves are supposed to be completely shut. If air leaks out of the exhaust or intake manifold, then its a valve sealing issue. If air leaks out of the crankcase breather, then its a ring issue.
If you are getting smoke but you still have no leakage in the leakdown test, then its most likely the valve STEM seals, which you can replace while the head is on. I'm about to do this on my D16A6 as well.
When you are replacing the valve stem seals, an alternative to using the leakdown hose to pressurize the cylinder is to put a bunch of soft rope down the spark plug tube, then roll the piston up to TDC. The bunched up rope will hold your valves in place while you do the work.
