Default Why does my stereo kick off when I hit the brakes?

this has never happened before today. I notcied it coming home from work, It would kick off for a split second then turn back on when I touched the brakes. Any ideas? Its an aftermarket stereo thats been in there for almost 2 years now with no problems.

This sounds like a power issue. Probably bad ground on the radio. Probaly loose.

Check the following wires on the deck unit:

ground - black, it should be connected to a GOOD ground source (hanes kits are good)
constant 12v (Probably yellow) again connected to a good source
Switched 12v (prob red) ditto on the source

Use a volt meter and connect it it the radio's ground, and to the yellow wire, press the brakes, does the voltage change? repeat for the red wire, Then connect the volt meter's negative wire direclty to a bolt or unpainted surface on the chassis, press the brakes, doe sthe voltage change?

sounds like your battery/alternator have seen better days (one of the two)... or else your just using too big of amps

when you hit the breaks your revs drop to idle where the alt produces a lot less current to the battery... so your stereo is still pulling full current causing the batt voltage to drop and cause the amp to go into protect

i may be wrong but that'd be my guess

All of the above are good suggestions, here's another, are you running any of your wires BEHIND the accelerator, brake or clutch? I made that mistake before and well, needless to say, everytime i stepped on the brake, I was actually PINCHING the power wire. Over time, the wire was basically cut.

Just a thought...

The deck is a JVC. I installed it almost 2 years ago using an adapter harness I bought at a local stero shop. Thats it for my stereo. No amps, subs, or anything else.

Thanks for your replies. I havent drove it since it happened , but I will today sometime and see what happens.

last time i saw that kind of behavior, my car battery needed to be replaced. if your battery is approx 4 years old or more, it might be time to think about changing it.

For me personally in my trecel, it was the alternator that wasn't charging the battery correctly, needed a jump start lately?
