does anyone know if a "h23a" is smoggable in california. I recently found out from a friend. He checked my enigne and said that the engine code did not match usdm standards and it was a jdm engine.

i don't know about cali but i remember reading that you're allowed to swap engines as long as it's the same size and same series. but it must meet all the requires. you cannot make an obd2 car into an obd1. like for me, i swapped in a 93 h22a which is obd1. but i swapped in all my obd2 components for simplicity as well as emissions. the car & computer doesn't know the difference and neither does the tech who smogs my car. i dont know how thorough testing is in cali though.
well in maryland for obd1 cars, they use the sniffer so it doesn't matter what motor you have in your car, as long as it doesn't produce the gases above the certain given allowed amount. i have a jdm h22a and i have an accord type r lip and it sits too low to get on the rollers so i was given a waiver for 2 years. which is good cause i don't think i'd pass lol.
If its a Japanese motor it will most likely fail visual. Depends on how attentive the smog tech is. As far as passing the emissions testing, it will depend on what ECU you are running, how mechanically sound the motor is, and if all the proper smog equipment is connected.
What car is this in?
