Default LEAK IN TRUNK/RUST -- PICTURES need some advice.

so i figured out where the water was leaking from, and there is some rust in the lining of my trunk on the left side. I uploaded some pictures to better clarify. There's also rust in the round-cut hole on the left side. None of the leaking is coming from the trunk lid or where the OEM spoiler is connected, just on the underside of the left part of the trunk. I hope it doesn't cost a fortune to fix, and if it's home-fixable. Any help and advice would be appreciated. thanks.

its not the rust that bothers me, its the rain that seeps in the trunk that makes my car smell musty.

So where is it originally coming in then? It really doesn't matter where it's dripping through in the trunk. We need to know where the water is coming into the car in the first place. So where is the hole on the outside them?

Maybe it's in the rear window seal? The images make it look like it's just rusted through under the trunk seal and it could be dripping in right through a rusted out hole through the body of the car now.

**** it can be home fixed its not that bad but from what I can see in the pics it looks savable.

You need a new trunk seal molding that right there is the problem right there
you need to tape up whats not rusted get some sand paper rustolem primer and some black paint same as your vehicle.

Sand off as much of the rust that you can and primer and paint it . you might wanna post this on body and appearance. They have actual body shop people that can help better.

maybe they can recommend some type of rust treatment. Look for hole that might have rusted through

Was the car ever in a accident ??????

get a hose and a friend, fold down your rear seats so you can see inside the trunk, a light would probably be very helpful, with the trunk closed have your friend spray water all over the trunk area, expecially around the edges, try to see where the water enters the vehicle. hope that helps.

When I looked at the thread at first that first photo wasn't there.

At the bottom of the first post it also says Modified by tekniq at 4:55 PM 7/8/2008 . This means the OP edited the first post. He probably added the first photo then.

get a water hose and start low, and work your way up, checking for the leak. better get every speck of the rust gone, or in time it will return...

It looks to me like somebody welded a quarter panel on and didn't clean up their welds, and didn't do a great job seam sealing it. Prob. why it's leaking. Do what 94EG8 said to do to find the leak, then sand off as much rust as you can. Next, seam seal the spot thats leaking and when that's dry, paint over it.

the water is coming in from the round cut hole. i tried sticking my finger in there to find a hole or something, but no luck. it's definitely coming from the round cut hole though. i sprayed the trunk with a hose and it was leaking from there. thanks for the replies though

the first owner got into an accident but it was in the front of the car, not the rear.

oh yea, and I did add/remove some pictures when i edited the post to show the damage more clearly, so don't flame that guy about "coupe or hatch". MY BAD!

The reason I asked is a common problem in the eg that the rear window since it opens separate that after a while the little rubber washers on the window wear out causing the window to look closed but it will leak because it happens on my eg.

The reason I asked him if it was in a accident was those look like welds were the panel seams together. and if it was the body shop didn't do a good job of primer or painting the seam to protect it.

Some People always wanna run up hill *** backwards! read the post dont just scroll down to the last 2or 3 and talk ****!

If your not here to help then your here to make problems and if your here to make problems get the F* out!

Something looks funny to me on one of the pics that makes me lean towards a panel being replaced.

Look at the second and third pic. There is over spray all over the place, yet the metal you can see through the hole has NO overspray on it. The metal that is spot welded behind it, has overspray right up to the joint.

yeah, that really looks like a piece was welded in at some point, rear fender probably started to rust and the previous owner had a new quarter panel welded in, maybe he didn't feel the need to tell you, but if thats not a new piece welded in i'll eat my hat.
