2000 Honda Civic - Collant Empty after new water pump installed...car overheating when sitting
I recently went up to the cabin (about 150 miles away) and on the way back I noticed the my temp gauge was rising (when normally it stays right in the middles ALWAYS) and when I started driving again, the temp dropped back down. Also when I turned on my fan to blow hot air in the car. Was a warm day outside 85 degrees, but have never had issues with temp of car. Stopped and checked coolant...reserve was EMPTY! Stopped and bought coolant and filled reserve for long trek home. Ran fine on highway. Stopped about 100 miles in and while waiting for cars to pass so I could turn the temp gauge started rising again and dropped when I started moving again. Coolant leel was checked and was at same level that I filled it to an hour and a half prior. Drove home and car then sat all night. No problems yet today, but I am wondering what some possibilites may be. About 4,000 miles ago I had my timing belt replaced, new water pump installed, trans flush and fill, new spark plugs and wires. I know that I have a very small crack in my oil pan, but my personal friend is my mechanic and he is getting me a new one to be replaced in the near future. What else could be causing this problem? Has 107,000 miles....and want to keep it for a couple more years to come - especially with recent gas prices!

Are you sure your fan is kicking on? Have you checked the thermostat?
Edit: Also, check the hoses when the motor is warm, if one is hot and the other is cool, you might have bigger problems.

If it does it while you're stopped, I would definitely check the fan switch.
Also, check the fan switch plug and make sure it does not have a short, this happened to me, luckily a good friend caught it.
