p73 Hondata tuned...?
Recently got done with my jdm swap in my 01 ITR. Going all motor, right now with basic bolt ons, nothing crazy. A little confused on tuning options. Ive read some posts bashing on hondata basically saying s100 s200 s300 isnt worth the money. I got a p73, should i get it tuned? worth my money? with s100, s200, or s300.

JOHN WAYNE is saying that a P73 is an OBD2 ecu and Hondata is only compatable with OBD1 ecus! You should get an OBD1 P28 or P72 ecu with an OBD1 to OBD2 harness and go with Hondata S300, you`ll love it!!!
Ok, thanks for the good info. p28 or p72? does it matter? does one ecu have any advantages over the other? Once i do all of this because it will be a good chunk of change, will i notice significant changes?

obd1 p72 doesnt offer any advantages over an obd1 p28 EXCEPT that you will retain a knock sensor with the p72. its nice to have, but not necessary because you will HEAR your car detonating if you are running too lean or have too much timing.

All tunning options for B series are all on OBD1, not just Hondata.

He can use any OBD1 ECU, aslong as it is VTEC chipped (PR3, P06, etc..) And he needs a OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness, not an OBD1 to OBD2.

It can control the secondary runners on a GSR intake manifold. Stock B series knock sensors are very inaccurate for sensing knock on a non stock engine.

I run a P06 ECU in the PY. Reason? It was easier to find, and a hell of a lot cheaper than P28's.
As for Hondata itself, I never had issues with it. I've had the S200 and S300 and would continue to recommend both.

Stop trying to open up a redundant can or worms, tuning options have been debated countless times in here already.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I think im going to a local tuning shop sometime this week to get prices....What kind of prices am i expecting? $600 for s300...obd2 ->obd1 conversion harness...$? p72/p28...$? and tuning prices/labor...$? After all said and done will i notice a change in the caR's performance?

the OP asked about if Hondata was worth the $$$... I said yes. You didn't even answer his ? LOL
FWIW, the S200 I hear is discontinued. No need for the s300 on his app unless he wants data logging and wants to tune others (S300's that is)
The S100 system is $195, plus a harness of 65-100 and an ECU that is anwhere from 75-170. This is WITHOUT tuning. Figure in another $200-500 for that.
So to the OP, is that total worth it?

Don't go with the S300 unless you want some of the reasons I just mentioned. The S100 will do just fine for your application.
Will you notice a change? That depends. You should. The power should be more linear (this is the tuners job) any idle issues will be addressed, and you should see some WHP gains in various areas of your curve.

I was fix fixing some misinformation.
I stopped giving recommendations and reasoning for tuning choices, I sound like a broken record most of the time. Goes in one ear and out the other for most folks. I just tell them go with what their tuner is most familiar with and prefers.

100% agree.
Take A$$penny for example, his car STILL hasn't been tuned for like 2 years and the reason is he's running a PowerFC (along with a few other reasons like he doesn't live in FL yet the car is here IIRC) but if your "local guy" doesn't do Hondata, take a look at Neptune, Chrome or other various Engine Management systems.
To the OP, you can probably do everything, EMS, ECU, Harness and tuning for around 1K or less

I just called a local shop (xxtuning) http://www.xxtuning.com/ and they told me they DO NOT do hondata tuning. They really specialize in suburu/sti anyway. But the guy gave me a name of a place that does do the tuning, RPM out of NYC in Queens. http://www.rpmnyc.com/intro.html I was just wondering if anyone ever heard of this shop and is trust worthy. Coming from XX tuning i can almost for sure say they are pretty trustworthy because xx does very good work, but it never hurts to double check....

What did they say they do use? Or are they like Titan Motorsports who only does Toyota and Suburu?

Well they told me they do not do hondata system tuning. But my one of my good friends brings his 07 sti there a lot and they do a great job. They do more of bmw/suburu/mustang work more than Honda. But i did just call rpm, he gave me prices that were pretty much what Dave_B told me. s100=$195. obd2->obd1 conversion harness=$125. Labor/Tune=$450. P28 ECU=$200. He gave me a grand total of $1175 for all the bells and whistles including hardware and dyno time. That expense added up real quick...

Yes, but that is overpriced.
This is a good choice, and probably better quality anyway.

I think i will buy all the parts myself instead of having a shop by the parts for me and ripping me off. I dont know if i want to drop all this money today anyway..

Yep. Check your local emissions laws, because a OBD-I ecu on an OBD-II car will fail you immediately.
This is part of the problem I have with Hondata, and why I wish someone would come up with a good solution for the OBD-II ECU's.
